    Hi all

I've been pretty fair about Citi in my banking relationship with them in thr past 5-6 months BUT I have some gripes about them now and it really makes me think about switching....

I've recently come back from USA and prior to going I let Citi know I was travelling and in addition, opened a US$ account with them as they said they could not guarentee my card would work with the Sterling account, OK, fine.

Transferred £2000 to US$ 4 days prior to trip and rang Citi on the the day I left the UK to link my Visa card to the US$ account.

Got to the US and found the card could not be used at hotel reception, it wasn't being swiped, the number was being tapped in by a man and it kept declining, despite it being linked to my US$ account. So went to use an ATM and the card was being rejected as 'card type not accepted' or 'Cannot Honour'.

I phoned Citi, and they said there was no problems and it should all be fine. It wasn't, I tried and treid many times to get money out, in the end, I transferred the money out to another account, which took 3 days. No apology from Citi when rang yesterday and complained, they just said 'these things sometimes happen' I'd told them about my trip no less than 3 times and took THEIR advice about opening a US$ account so I COULD use my card in ATM's abroad.

So I linked my card back to my UK£ account.

After landing at Gatwick, I tried to use the card in the NCP, but it kept telling me Card Type Not Accepted, despite the fact I am able to use it at NCP in Cardiff, same machine, same company. So I then had to go back to a cash machine and withdraw cash and it wouldn't let me, despite my balance being fine for the withdrawl.

I was lucky enough to have another, cash card with me with enough money in to be able to pay to get my car out.

Again, no explaination from Citi when I called them, they told me if I have concerns, I need to put them in writing.

Really annoyed by them, I followed their advice, I follwed their T&C's to the letter, giving them enough notice of my intention to travel and use my card abroad, I'm even more annoyed as I am on the £10 a month account and I really should be able to access my money around the world.

I've applied for a citi account as I am moving abroad and they give your free international transfer to cover my mortgage as long as I bank with citi un the uae

although my credit is not great.... so will they offer a basic account? I dont mind as I wont need the visa?
Isn't the knowledge that comes from experience more valuable than the knowledge that doesn't?

    Hi all,

I have just applied for a Citibank account too and notice that I have to send a £1.00 cheque from my personal account.

I do not have a chque book for my present bank account.

Does that mean that I will not get a new account.

    Many Thanks

Send them a letter saying you do not have a chq book and include extra id, That should be ok. Just because you do not have a chq book does not mean you will not get it.

As marcellep has mentioned, send extra ID:
Colour photocopy of passport or driving licence photocard
    Utility Bill
    Bank Statement

and a cover letter stating you do not have a chequebook, they use the cheque as ID verification, you can make an initial £1 deposit when your account is open by electronic transfer or over the counter with your paying in book at Lloyds TSB.

NB They do seem to have tightened up their criteria as well at the moment, they don't seem to be accepting as many applications from people who say they have had credit problems in the past, so if you have, you may want just to check on the phone with them before you get a credit search registered from them. Actually saying that too...my friend applied, through the refer a friend scheme, she has a perfect credit history and was declined, so not sure if they are just taking a few applications now, maybe they have a good consumer base now because of MSE or whether they are being selective???

It is incorrect to tell you that complaints need to be put into writing. At this point Citibank are breaking their own complaints code. It's quite curious how frequently banks do this, they just don't spend money on training i guess. It does add force to your complaint as it indicates prima facie incompetence. I suggest you now write in with your original grievance and raise also the refusal of the operator to take a verbal complaint as such, and point out that this is against their own complaint procedure and that this means they are also out of time with the five days letter checkpoint after receiving a complaint. This procedure is laid down by the FSA. The reason that banks have a proper complaint procedure is because they are regulated and must have one.

You should ask in your letter for the resolution you want eg recompense for any expense caused, full letter of apology plus explanation of what went wrong, what have you.

Don't let them off the hook.

I post below Citibank's published complaints procedure.

45.1 Should You be dissatisfied with any aspects of the services provided under this Agreement, You may make a complaint to Your relationship manager.
45.2 Within 5 Business Days of Citibank receiving the complaint, You will be notified of the action that has been taken or, alternatively, will be notified of the action that has been planned and the date upon which Citibank expects this action to have been implemented and You will have received written acknowledgement of the complaint (notifying You of the name or job title of the individual handling the complaint for Citibank together with details of Citibank’s internal complaint handling procedures).
45.3 Within four weeks of receiving the complaint, Citibank will send You a final response or a holding response, explaining why Citibank cannot yet resolve the complaint and indicating when Citibank will make further contact (which will be within eight weeks of receipt of the complaint).
45.4 If Citibank is unable to make a final response within eight weeks after its receipt of the complaint, Citibank will explain the reasons for this, indicate when Citibank expects to be able to provide a final response and inform You that You may refer the complaint to the Financial Ombudsman Service, regarding which Citibank will give You an explanatory leaflet.
45.5 You are reminded that You have a right of complaint direct to the Financial Ombudsman Service if dissatisfied with the outcome of Citibank’s investigation of the complaint, or if You feel that Citibank has not conducted the business throughout in conformity with this Agreement and, therefore, to ask the Financial Ombudsman Service to investigate the complaint. You must do this within six months of Citibank sending its final response regarding the complaint. The address to which You should write is: The Financial Ombudsman Service (FOS) South Quay Plaza 183 Marsh Wall London E14 9SR Tel: Helpline 0845 080 1800 Tel: Switchboard 019 7964 1000 The Website: www.financial-ombudsman.org.uk

How is everyone finding the citibank account now it's changed to 'Plus'.

TBH, I thinking of transferring mine to the 'Access' account as I'm not using the benefits.

I also applied for an OD and got turned down as they said I didn't meet the critera - I have domiciled my salary for the last 3 months (the amount specified) and my credit file is slowly building up again .. but they didn't check my CRA files .. They just said they based the decision on when I opened my account

    Hi All,

3 month update for anyone interested -

Just been upgraded to a 3-in-1 debit card - however they have to block the old debit card while the new one is issued , so havent given them the go-ahead yet for this.

However, I'm not eligible for the overdraft facility currently - which isn't too much of problem.

The only downside of having a Citibank account is I cannot pay 02 using either my debit card or the Citi Credit card I have - so Nationwide account is being opened for this.

All in all very very pleased with Citibank, always polite on the phone and email responses.

    Gavin
