re-signal strength

Joe, your router statistics tell us the speed of your connection to the telephone exchange, as being around 6mbps.
The signal strength indication on your PC tells you the quality of the link between your PC and the router.
You appear to be on a non LLU service from AOL, so are being sold a rebranded BT service which is overloaded and thus your speeds are being throttled at peak times.That gum you like is coming back in style.0 -

HI GUYS;;;Just thought you all deserved an update;;;gunjacks kick up the a--e did the trick:beer:;;Been on to aol, via e-mail, replying to his to me regarding renewal of contract in october;;
I mentioned my speed issues and he said, as penrhyn:A: claimed;;;
I am on BT ISPstream repackaged;;;;He did a line check and said it was capable of up to 8mbs;;;He asked me about my router, and asked me to do some speed tests today, and he will ring at 6pm tonight;;
My router is in the Kitchen/diner, ;;;my pc is in the lounge/wireless;;
I took pc in the kitch and did tests wireless and ethernet, still am ;;;
Surprised:eek:;;;Wireless 1 foot from router=4.3;;3.0;;0.7;;3.2 mbs
ethernet same place;;4.9;;4.7;;4.9;;4.8 mb
repeated an hour later;;;
wireless;;4.5;;1.0;;3.4;;1.2mbs
ethernet;;4.8;;4.6;;4.8;;4.8mbs
conclusion;;;wireless signal loss of speed dramatic;;;even 1 foot away;;
To test the theory I am in the longe with the router connected to main BT box via a long 10 metre extension cable;;;no socket on lounge;;YET;and pc 1 foot away again;
result;;:eek:
wireless;;1.1;;1...1.6..2.8mbs
ethernet;;;4.5;;4.5;;4.4;;4.4mbs
conclusion;;same;;wireless signal severely reduces speed;
AOL, claims as I would go on thier LLU at exchange;;;up to 24 mbs;;
My speed should increase, as long as internal wiring is not at fault, hence my tests at main BT box;;
Solution;;;
1;;New router AOL will provide "might" give better wireless signal;
If not;;run new cable into lounge and put socket in, then us ethernet all the time, which is no big deal for me, as I can get under the floor easy to do it;;:j
As the renewal contract is so good, and I have been with them 6 years, I am seriously considering taking 1 of the 2 offers available to me and stay put, but give AOL ?TT my line;;;;:(
I will post them here;;see what you think??;;;;;;;;;?Dear Member,

joe, as stated before, if you move to LLU (the service described above in the AOL mail) you should be getting around 16 Meg download speed on your line....lucky s0d......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......
I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple0 -

Just done more speedtests, wireless signal is definitely down, still getting constant 4.s via ethernet.but sub 2,s wireless,. ;;as you stated very early in the thread, it could be my pc wireless card???
Definitely going to put socket next to pc in the lounge and use ethernet;;
If it increases with llu, more the better;;;win/win;;;;I,m happy getting 4,s so if as you say, 16meg, I,d go cockahhop;;:j:j
presume dlm will be on for a while when they swap, but I,m only giving them my line;;;how do they swap to llu in exchange, is it manual, or flick of a switch???thanks for reply, much appreciated;;here,s aol,s e-mail about speed/lineOk,
No provider can guarantee a minimum rate of transfer at is a copper wire connection and guarantees can only be made on Fibre Optic Broadband as this is built to sustain Broadband signals whereas the copper wire networks where only ever built and designed for telephone signals, hence the non-guarantee.
As a matter of course we need to complete full diagnostics as per the BT phone book (page 7), this is to ensure that all your equipment and internal wiring is ruled out before an engineer is despatched to investigate the issue.
You will be on our full LLU network which will give you speed up to 24MBps and we will include a new router for free as part of the package, if you cannot test an alternative router on your line is there any way you can test your router on someone else's line?
You could connect the router and 1 phone through the filter on the master socket (details below) to avoid missing calls thaty you may be expecting, I can call you from 18:00 if you like, I will in work until 20:15.
The master socket shown in the bottom diagram is the more recent one that has been the standard Can you gaurantee that my line will be LLU? - Yes
am I on BT IPStream, just repacked as AOL,s? - Yes, you are on the BT network and we can only offer up to 8 Mbps whereas on our network we can offer up to 24Mbps
Your line will take a maximum of 8MBps on any providers service but I believe your slow speeds could be fixed seperately to this, I just need to know whether you have removed all the equipment from the line and tested 2 speerate routers/filters through master socket. If you have doen this then the issue needs to be sent to an engineer to fix the network.0 -

This is a continuation from the Micro-filters thread:

Firstly, I would suggest that you try a different router/MODEM. Try to borrow one - something like a Netgear, just as a comparison.
The fact that you are having connection problems when you restart your laptop may be software related hence why you need to look at the DSL light. If it is green and not flashing, the problem is most likely related to your computer.
Having the router connected on the end of a long telephone cable is not going to help with your frequent disconnections.
Have you tried removing all devices from other telephone sockets including any phones, Sky/cable boxes, fax machines, old analogue MODEMs in desktop computers etc.
Try just having the router on the main BT socket with nothing else attached and monitor the connection for a few hours.
What make micro-filters are you using? How many telephone extensions do you have?
Your wireless problem is separate and may be related to interference from other devices such as a DECT phone or a neighbour using the same channel. Have you tried a different Wi-Fi channel further away from the one you are currently using?If my post hasn't helped you, then don't click the 'Thanks' button!0 -

1;;cannot get another router, await my new one coming, ordered yesterday
2;don,t have problemswhen restarting, dsl green light constant, not flickering, ethernet,wlan,internet are flashing;
3;done tests with all dect phones disconnected and pc adjacent to router at master box, for hours this friday gone....same results;;
that,s when I realised the drmatic speed loss between ethernet /wireless;;;4.5mbs>0.5>3+mbs, erratic; That,s when I decided to go all LLU+phones+line with TT;
4;using speedtouch filters, all new today, but same before, second speedtouch router;;
5;used inSIDDer this week gone, no other network incroaching my network;;;graphs basically flatlining, no meeting, nowhere near each other;; Haven,t tried a different channel because of inSIDDer results;
edit;;;Only one extension socket for emergency phone, which I am now using for my pc;
