Would you sell DD's old toys on ebay for new ones for Christmas?

Her toys hun - they belong to her not you. How would you feel if OH sold your jewellery then bought you a present out of the proceeds? I wouldnt be happy!
We actually used this as an example when we were discussing it :rotfl: that would be ok, as long as it was items I didn't want or need. i'd much rather OH buy me a surprise then i took the money and got something.
As long as it wasn't something I wanted to keep, and DD's toys were not anything she wanted, she didn't want or need them, just she didn't want the money, she wanted a surprise.Forty and fabulous, well that's what my cards say....0 -
I'd not get away with it now mine are older, at 13 she's the right to decide how she wants to spend 'her' money - and it is hers, although I think you have the right to veto what it's spent on.
Whatever it was you were planning to buy, can you not encourage her to save some more towards it or offer to pay half to it for Christmas? At that age they really appreciate being able to buy for themselves and don't mind having surprises the same way as when they were younger.
She gave me her Christmas list and the money from selling her old things was going towards the list.
i don't mean that the only items she would get would be from this money, but she asked for some Jack Wills stuff and this money was for that.Forty and fabulous, well that's what my cards say....0 -
Why not put the money in a savings account for her when she is older?
Me and my sister did a couple of car boots when we were that age to get rid of toys we had grown out of, and we used the money to buy maybe 1 or 2 nice new things and saved a little.
She has a savings account which we contribute to monthly, this money is to be spent, it would be a shame to take items away and not replace them with things. She wanted it as a surprise for christmas, and that was why she only chose to get the money for some items. I don't think she wanted to actually buy the items herself, rather have them wrapped and a big bow on :rotfl:Forty and fabulous, well that's what my cards say....0 -

Maybe as thats expensive you could put some of the money towards that with her permission and put some into savings?
edit - just seen your post. Maybe you could get her to keep some of the money back to spend in the new year in the sales if shes into clothes?0 -
If she was 3 yes, but not at 13, I think its a bit tight and agree with your oh ... but can she now buy whatever it was you wanted to buy her?1,2 & 5p: Christmas day food £9.31
10 & 20p: misc savings £2.70
50p: Christmas presents £3.50
£2: holidays £2.000 -
Well the money is going on her whichever way so not a problem, I have sold on ebay to raise money for xmas the same way and whichever way they get it back either in toys/clothes/foods they love for xmas/ towards whatever they need/have asked for so it is all the same.:D0

Yes, but I don't think i've explained it very well.
DD has asked for me to take the money and to buy items for her for christmas off a list.
I haven't taken items she wanted to keep. I asked which ones she wanted to keep the money for and they are for her to spend on what ever she wants.
She had a list of christmas items, she knows i'm on half pay, and rather than her buy xyz she has given me a list of rstuvwxyz and I will pick items so she doesn't know what she is getting.
As the money mounted up, she obviiously thought 'ooo there's more her than i thought', she is only 13 and didn't really equate all her old toys to money.
It was only when OH said how could I do such a thing that I thought to question it.
DD now has the money transfered as she asked for it, but it was a question that was playing on my brain; was it so bad when she asked me to give her a surprise to do so from the sale of old toys.Forty and fabulous, well that's what my cards say....0 -
my DS has just turned 6, he had stuff mountin up that was not being used.
He was given the option to sell the stuff, and he chose what could go. ALL the money we got has straight back to him, for him to spend on what he wants now, he bought himself a nintendo ds, which he wanted for ages, and has paid for his games, etc.
He's actually appreciating it more now he's paid for it himself too.
Thanks, that's interesting.
It's similar to us only DD gave me a list of what she wanted and wanted a surprise. So i guess you're saying if your DS gave you some Nintendo games to pick from with the money you would rather give him the money and him pick the games.
Maybe i should have just done this from the start:rotfl:Forty and fabulous, well that's what my cards say....0 -

i think shes actually saying that the proceeds from the sale was always his, and so nothing to do with her in any way. certainly not money for gifts from her to her son.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature.
