Isn't working tax credit there to pay childcare bills??? That's what mine gets spent on. When i work out my bills i never include nursery fees or WTC as i know that the WTC pays the nursery fees so you shouldn't have to worry about it.

First i've heard? I pay all of my own nursery fees?

Oh dear, have I got it wrong? I'm sure I read or heard this in the news - quite recently in fact. I remember thinking to myself, oh yet again here we go!
I'm sure someone will correct me soon!

Thanks spendless, what's this all about then? He is 4 now, but as I work p/t, I still pay for the extra hours he does - on top of the funded sessions.

You can salary sacrifice upto £55 a week in exchange for childcare vouchers which are tax and NI free. Both you and your OH can do this if both firms offer them.

We used them last year to pay for DD nursery which enabled me to go to college to get some qualifications back for when I return to work.
  • I can understand why you are peeved but remember there are always those worse off than you. A while before my daughter was born i was made redundant (no payout might i add) so i had no choice but to claim benefits. To make it worse me and OH were having really bad times (i think i had PRE-natal depression) and he couldnt take it anymore and left for a few months. And when i was earning it was only £14k and OH £11K so imagine going from that income to next to nothing and having to look after a baby. I wasnt even entitled to maternity pay.

Now me and OH have sorted ourselves out and we are back together - my income has now gone down to next to nothing as he has to support me. He has a better job now and is getting just over £20k but with £650 a month to pay in rent and loads more in bills taken away, and my little bit of money on top it is extremely tight. To be honest if my daughter was a little older (she is only 8months at the mo) i would be delighted to have a job that paid what yours does. But its not as easy as that i am afraid - i have office and financial and sales experience and As levels but that doesnt help you get a job that easily these days.
As he is earning over a certain amount we are barely entitled to much at a in terms of tax credits and all the other benefits. But i would rather us be a family than be a single mum.

I wouldnt be to fretfull about it if i were you, it is more a matter of wanting to provide a family structure for your child or not.

If he doesnt want to split money 50-50 i think you need to consider if you want him moving in - he needs to understand that you are going to be worse off and decide where his priorities are, keeping all of his own money or you!

And i can tell you why single mothers are slightly better off - it is because when you have to go shopping for one and a baby it is alot more expensive than it would be if you went for a couple and split the costs half. Shop quantities are rarely ever made to suit one person - you also end up with alot of waste food because the portions a larger. I hope that makes sense.

Ah but you should cook for 2 and freeze one portion, it is actually money saving.:j
