Because the base price is set high enough for them to still make a margin. Capped tariffs are few and far between in these days of volatile wholesale prices.

So it is basically a fixed tariff? (or at least very similar?)

If there is a base price that is set high, presumably it cannot fall under this amount?

Even if it is better, it isn't of much use to anyone if they aren't currently available.

The price can rise or fall, but cannot rise above a predetermined level.
It's more like a variable tariff, but with a maximum.

Here is a link to the 2014 prices for EDF:

    http://www2.savetodaysavetomorrow.com/documents/PP2014-Ratecard.pdf

Looking at that rate card and comparing it to Saver 7:

For electric: daily charge up from 23.36p to 26.25p, up 2.89p. Per unit up from 9.92p to 12.72p, up 2.8p.

Gas: daily charge up from 21.95p to 24.15p, up 2.2p. Per unit up from 3.298p to 4.056p, up 0.758p.

What do people think? £75 welcome bonus is also available too (I think?).

I am on online saver too, never been able to register for online always had paper bills. Iam also coming to the end of my 12th agreement 31st Dec. They state i will be transfered to their Standard prices from 1st Jan 2012

    Electric
    OS7 Daily standing charge(per day) 24.48p , Jan 1st 2012 14.70p
    KWh charge 10.27p jan 1st 2012 13.08p

    Gas
    Daily standing charger p/day 21.95 jan 1st 2012 23.10p
    KWh 3.298p jan 1st 2012 4.080p

How come your figures are different?????????

^ I wasn't comparing to the standard tariff, I was comparing to PP2014. It is also different for each region too.

I got my comparison figures for OS7 from what was available on u switch, so that might be another reason if there are any differences. I didn't have anything else to hand at that time.

I think my calculation is pretty much right for me, I have just switched to PP2013, afterall, or a least started the switch Of tariff via edf online.

Finally got my online account today!

When I checked it, they have only switched gas to PP2013, not electric.
  • In the same boat with online saver7 ending 31 dec.
I am looking at their Fix for 2012 tariff as probably the best option. However I had this email from the edf team which is interesting

"As you are on our Online Saver Version 7 Tariff I would strongly recommend that you stay on this tariff as long as you can and agree a new tariff closer to 31 December. However we are unsure how much longer our Fix for 2012 tariff will be available, as for legal reasons we need to withdraw a tariff 1 year before the expiry date. "

SO... if you wait it may be gone.

My calculations suggest that the extra costs (higher rates) for switching now would be only £10-15, so i'm inclined to grab it while it lasts.
If you dont switch to another tariff with them then you end up paying their standard tariff (very poor) until you switch away..

  • Hi All,
I'm in the same boat with EDF.

    For info -

I spoke to their online 'helper' who informed me that EDF's 'Fix for 2012' is their cheapest tariff. Uswitch confirmed this, and told me that it will be £100 pa more expensive than my current online saver7 tariff.
EDF told me to change over around mid-December so that I get the full benefit of my current, cheaper tariff (assuming the 'fix for 2012 still exists!).

Isn't it just great, eh? Britain in 2011, and most of the population can't afford to put the heating on in the winter. Bloody disgraceful. What's the so-called points-dodging energy secretary doing about it? nada, zero, zilch.

    i totally agree
i cant decide whats best to do, may go down the fix till 2012 route though but sholing cant afford to stay warm in the house and have to really think about usage , i have oil for heating though now that is extortionate and will be looking at alternatives in the near future
