EDF Online Saver Version 7

I switched to this in December 2010 and received a letter yesterday saying this is coming to an end on 31 December 2011 and I will be transferred to the standard (variable) tariff.

At the time there were a lot of people who switched to OS v7 so I assume there are many in the same boat. What is everyone thinking of doing? I've just had a search of the forum and noticed a lot of people transferred in July. My property is currently empty so the price increase didn't affect me too much, although I will be moving in soon on my own so am looking for a new tariff/supplier. It's difficult to estimate how much I will use though as I haven't been in that situation yet.

Am I best simply searching for the cheapest tariff using a comparison site?

Yes, but make sure you quote based on your actual consumption. Its the only way to find out what the cheapest product is for you.

Don't forget to check out cash back sites as well, as you can probably get some extra money. I only swapped to Saver 7 as I got £100 cashback from EDF + £80 cashback from quidco, without that it would not have been the cheapest for me.

Unfortunately you are a bit late to the party as over the last few weeks the cheap products have been pulled. Also If you swap before the tariff ends you may have to pay a cancellation fee unless you stick with EDF.

I was on online saver 7 but swapped to EDF Energys fixed S@ver v2 a few weeks ago, however this isn't available any more.
  • Funnily enough I have just had a call off British Gas asking me to come back and offering me a free energy smart monitor, £125 cashback after 12 months and free cavity wall insulation if I sign up to their fixed tariff until 2014.

What do you think? Is it the right time to fix or are prices likely to be reduced in the next three years? Really don't know what to do.

Thanks, I noticed people had swapped to v2 but thought I had to stay with v7 until the 12 months was up. I only went with v7 because of the £100 cashback and £80 quidco too. It's difficult for me to compare based on my actual consumption because the property has been empty for 12 months so I don't actually know what my consumption would be once I move in, which will be just after xmas hopefully.

I am in the same boat, didn't think I could switch until the end of my contract.

I am going to look on the comparison sites and see what they have to offer.

When you say consumption, I don't know what mine is, so how do I find it out?

I know what I pay in DD each month.

Can I just ring up EDF and ask for an annual energy statement for both gas and electric?

First of all BG's energy monitor is rubbish, it wraps round your main electricity wire and measures changes in flow. Its not very accurate and only measures the whole houses output so its hard to target individual appliances.

Cavity wall insulation is available for free from EDF as well as BG and may be on offer from others. Unfortunately fixed 2014 is not on comparison sites so I don't know how competitive it is, but generally if your offered something by a supplier its not going to be their cheapest tariff.

Yes but it should also be on your last bill, if you don't have one you can either ring up to get it or just submit a meter reading a new bill is sent out providing you have not had one with in the last month. (You don't get bill until you submit a meter reading)

Don't base a quote on a DD amount as the DD amount could be wrong or it could contain extra money to cover any debt you've built up or a reduction for any credit you've built up.

Here is a link to the 2014 prices for EDF:

    http://www2.savetodaysavetomorrow.com/documents/PP2014-Ratecard.pdf

Looking at that rate card and comparing it to Saver 7:

For electric: daily charge up from 23.36p to 26.25p, up 2.89p. Per unit up from 9.92p to 12.72p, up 2.8p.

Gas: daily charge up from 21.95p to 24.15p, up 2.2p. Per unit up from 3.298p to 4.056p, up 0.758p.

What do people think? £75 welcome bonus is also available too (I think?).

No one knows-if we did, we'd all jump the same way.
But what is more important is what price you fix at.
A 3 year fix means a lot of crystal ball gazing. Essentially you are just buying security-but probably at a high premium.
Start, as ever, with your annual kWh figures on a comp. site

Does anybody know if I switched to EDF fixed to 2013, would my new tariff start when my old one ends 31/12/11? Or will they try to switch earlier so I am paying more?
