Does anybody know if I switched to EDF fixed to 2013, would my new tariff start when my old one ends 31/12/11? Or will they try to switch earlier so I am paying more?

Hi there i had the same question and the answer is no - you would go straight onto the new tarrif -and unfortunately the gas/elec went up in price i was informed on wednesday, i had a guy from edf say that if i switched to the fixed rate till dec 2013 or 14 there would be a dramatic increase as your paying for the certainty of knowing your charges will stay the same - im in the same boat now - and ive decided that the costs have gone up anyways so i will ring them about the 28th december and change to the fix till 2012 then (not such a 'dramatic increase in d/d) - and still save abit for the next 7 weeks on my cheaper tarrif?

moomoominx - I compared and the price increase doesn't seem that big to me, I won't really tell until I get my next bill though or I am missing something?!

This is my comparison of Online saver 7 vs Fixed 2013

    Electric

Daily Standing Charge was 23.36, now 14.00, down 9.36
Unit rate was 9.92, now 12.25, up 2.33

    Gas

Daily Standing Charge was 21.95, now 23.10, up 1.15
Unit rate was 3.298, now 4.080, up 0.782

Plus £50 credit from EDF for switching to the new tariff, possibly £20 for going through quidco too??

On my bill it doesn't have the annual consumption figures so I can't work out my actual usage and costs.

I have just gone ahead and started the switch anyway, I am quite happy with EDF to be honest. I have never been set up online with them, but they are cheaper than my previous suppliers.

They will switch you as soon as you ring up, swapping tariff on the same supplier should be almost instant. So I'd ring up on 31/12.
But much easier just to change it via your online account than suffer EDF's call centre delays.

I don't actually have an online account with them yet, despite being with them for nearly 12 months, on an online tariff!

You can still switch online on EDF's website though. The difference between online saver 7 and fixed 2012 is about £60 per year according to uswitch, so I expect fixed 2013 will be a maximum of £100 per year more (but probably less). With the automatic £50 credit from EDF, even as an existing customer, I am ok with switching now.

According to the website it can take anything from a week or more. I will ring up today and get my meter readings up to date though.

Fixed 2013 has not been available for a while, I think you mean price protection 2013. PP is 2013 slightly more expensive than Fixed 2013.

If you wait until the 31st there is no guarantee that PP2013 will still be available, but that is the choice you make!

The clever tactic is to swap to the new product but give a higher reading than actual, but that is is also illegal!

    Gonna follow this thread carefully.

I am in the same boat as those above, didn't think I could switch until the end of my contract.

I too am going to look on the comparison sites and see what they have to offer.

    Cheers

Yes you are right, confusing because it is fixing your price to 2013, but called price protection 2013. But you know what I meant anyway ;).

When i do the comparison on energyhelpline i get EDF Energy - Fix for 2012 as the best tarrif. As someone said here the longer you fix i think the more expensive it is

At first it is, but you would imagine that as energy costs continue to rise what you are over paying now, you make back when the non fixed tarrifs go up each year.

It's a gamble whatever you do, if you don't fix and the price rockets you are stuffed, if you fix and the price drops your stuffed. :D
