I remember a few years ago, a dog went missing from Pickering steam rally in Yorkshire when fireworks went off as part of the rally finale. The owners didn't live in the area, they were just visiting it.
It was missing for a long time although I can't remember how long. Its owners kept going up to the area trying to find it but didn't. They had given up all hope when it turned up on their doorstep having travelled hundreds of miles to get home. It couldn't have done it by smell as it had travelled up there in their car. Its feet were extremely sore from all the miles it had done but apart from that it was ok. It must have crossed no end of major roads on its travels but it was determined to get home.
Lets hope that Ruars manages to find his way home safe from wherever he is.

Was in Sainsburys yesterday, and saw they're selling their fireworks again..Buy One, get One free. I'm absolutely disgusted. Surely this only encourages chavvy garden displays?
    :mad::mad:
How on earth can the campaigns move forward when the supermarkets are pulling this carp?

If they want noises and flashing lights- they should go to a bl00dy nightclub!

I know this is MSE, but i hope this is one BOGOF offer that people resist :(
Ruaridh Armstrong-missing since 05/11/11. Come home old boy-we miss you x

If you can't stand behind our troops, please feel free to stand in front of them.

I will respect your opinions, even if I don't agree with them :)

Couldn't agree more sazzy. How many dogs will be terrified out of their wits this year?

The damn things have already started round here...my dog Lucy gets so frightened, although Jack's not that bothered.

    I absolutely detest them.

Yes, I think there should be a ban on all fireworks sold for the public to buy. They cause so much trouble.
A few years back there was a gang one night going up and down our road in stolen cars with heads poking out of the sun roofs, throwing big, display fireworks at other gang members coming down the road the opposite side, it was terrifying for humans as well as pets, they were like jousting with them and the fireworks were flying off everywhere, it was like lving in Beirut for a few hours, they were hitting windows - it broke next doors window and set the curtains on fire, thank God they were in to put it out, just a spark landed on my car windscreen and it actually burnt a hole in it!! The local police couldn't do anything as they had got them stuck in the police station, not letting them out!!
Police from neighbouring areas couldn't get near them, as soon as they turned up, the gang cars just shot off in different directions and then came back when the police had gone. They had hundreds of calls but were unable to stop it - mind you, all they really needed to do was block the road off, but they didn't because I suppose it would just have moved elsewhere. An absolutely terrifying experience which luckily only happened the once when we had a particularly bad gang of youths in the area.
Apparently, they had broken into a warehouse where there were a load of these big display ones.

Luckily my dog is not particularly bothered about them but I feel so sorry for the cats in the area which are still left outside.

Here's Ruars candle link again. http://www.gratefulness.org/candles/candles.cfm?l=eng&gi=RUARS

Hurry back home Ruars where your mum will keep you safe this year. xx

I screamed at some idiots last night on waste land nearby trying to tie a firework to a struggling young cat's tail.

The cat got away because they'd thought they were unobserved and I yelled so loud they dropped the cat AND the firework.

I know one of the kids, aged about 12, and I've been round to his mother today to tell her what the little sh*t was up to last night.

She was horrified and I think he's going to be in real trouble.

    Serves him right. Little monster.

Everytime I walk past a firework display cabinet I think of Sazz and her Ruars and the distress that fireworks cause.
It's not only domestic pets as horses have to be taken in too.

Personally, I can't find a reason for fireworks, certainly not on a money saving site.

See one display, seen them all. Might as well tie a fiver to a stick and set light to it.

I have a friend who many years ago took in a young cat who'd had its tail blown off by a banger tied to it. I can't comprehend who would do such a thing. What evilness is there in some people?

    I can't believe it's already nearly a year!

I was thinking about you a couple of days ago, as there was an ad on tv for a plug-in product to calm dogs down.

In a country where health and safety is taken to such silly levels, I can never understand how fireworks - which really are small explosives - can be sold so freely!
