Do you really have to blanch veg before you freeze it? I did some carrots and turnip yesterday, blanched and froze them but now my freezer stinks of carrot and turnip!

Could I just get away with chopping and freezing and missing the whole blanching out?

The blanching is to kill any bacteria that may survive freeezing that live in the veg so I would guess its best not to skip it

Do you have to wait till your car/house insurance is up for renewal before you change it to somewhere cheaper?

    Hi hazzie,

Sorry, I don't know the answer to your question but you may get more help on the Insurance & Life Assurance board.

Short answer is no. However, my experience is now that car insurers are competing to keep price down. They then add hidden charges, and charge (£30 for me last) to cancel or change details. As Lynz says, take a look at the small print.

Hi all, I've stuck this one back up since it does seem to help to catch quick questions

I have to roast my veg for tonights tea in the oven seeing as the hob is busted, do I have to par cook them first (in microwave) (potatoes/parsnip/carrot) or do I just bung 'em in, and do I add oil or anything to the roasting tin? Also, can I cook broccoli/cabbage in the microwave?

If you don't want to par boil the potatoes then just chop em up small. Par boiling will just mean they cook a bit quicker. I usually chop them all up to bite size pieces, spray the tin with oil, chuck em in, spray a little oil on the top and then leave them for at least half an hour. Nice if you add chopped red onion, baby tomatoes in with the parsnips, potatoes, carrots.... sweet potato is good this way too.

Sorry can't help on the broccoli/cabbage thing. ;)

I frequently cook all my veg in the microwave. I bought a cheap microwave steamer to do them and they take about 4 mins. Previous to this i put them chopped and washed in a microwaveable plastic pot and bunged the veg in with a slop of water and then zapped em for 4-5mins until they tasted cooked. I think some people cover the pot, i never did, i am lazy!
