I have to roast my veg for tonights tea in the oven seeing as the hob is busted, do I have to par cook them first (in microwave) (potatoes/parsnip/carrot) or do I just bung 'em in, and do I add oil or anything to the roasting tin? Also, can I cook broccoli/cabbage in the microwave?
Your root veggies can be treated the same way as you would do roast potatoes, and for the same timings if you cut them all to similar sizes.

My microwave instruction book (800W) says yes to cabbage and greens:-

Add 90mil (6 tablespoons of water)

Cover and cook on high for 7 minutes.

taters and roots can be done in the micro - again 90mil water 6-7 mins on high for 450g (one pound)

Soak it in Coca Cola? It used to do wonders for my brasses.

    It is worth a try.

  • Anything acidic works to clean copper coins. Coke contains phosphoric acid, and ketchup acetic acid (vinegar). Surprised that vinegar doesn't work. Indicates that the tarnish on the £1 coin may not be the same thing.

Have you found anything that works, yet?

  • Hi, this is my first time, I've been reading everyone's posting for ages & I'm really excited to find that there are like minded people out there.

Can anyone provide me with the seeting & instructions on making slow cooker porridge? I tried it yesterday but it burnt so don't want to put it on overnight till I've got it right.

    Many thanks
  • Hi Bright and Beautiful:)
I don't know the answer to your question, but I make porridge for my kids most mornings on the hob and it takes 5 mins tops. I'm not sure there's much advantage to be gained from slow-cooking it ;)
  • Hi, take a look at the Slow cooker - the Recipe collection. Search for porridge and you get plenty of hits. Try post 310.

Most people agree with thriftlady - no advantage over hob or microwave.
