Car insurance successes stories

I went with John Lewis insurance on my own car as it was a great deal with £56 cash back. Received ok!
My wife's insurance now coming up, 2.0 turbo diesel, business use.
Used all comparison sites but no where near the what John Lewis are quoting £155 less £56 cash back again hopefully? = £99 fully comp/protected/business:)
Wow! So cheap
I've just re-done my insurance; 30, 3.0 twin turbo diesel, business use, 100k miles is finally under the £1k mark with cashback. It was £2700 for the 9 months, just before the EU ruling came into effect!

Had my renewal with Aviva - they wanted nearly £400 a year (up from £275 last year). Shopped around & Churchill were £100 cheaper so rang Aviva to see if they can do better than renewal price, they suggested adding my car to my wife's policy on their multi car policy - my cover would be exactly the same as it is now & I keep my own no claims bonus etc. They gave me a quote of £129 for the 9 months remaining on her policy which would mean around £170 for 12 months (their words not mine!) :j
Needless to say I snapped their hands off.
It's always worth ringing your insurer even if they are £100's more than other quotes.0 -

I don't know why insurers can't just give you their very best price every year! It would get me recommending them alot more if they were as loyal to their customers as their customers are to them.English by birth. GEORDIE by the grace of God.0 -
Last year I used the full list of MSE advice to reduce my car insurance from 550 to 325!! & paid it off in full!
- checked & compared different sites
- Haggled so that my previous insurer matched that lowest quote
- and Key for me was to check my actual milage (each year it is recorded on your MOT if you dont know what it was). Standard seems to be 15K, but I havnt done over 6K in years, due to always taking OHs car on holidays etc. doing less mileage means my costs were slashed
- also check your (legitimate) Job Title wording... Within the same job spec I saved significantly... Eg, I'm a council worker and also a museum attendant... Same job, different risks I guess, so one was cheaper than the other!
** so record and report your millage, do use all of martins tools and ESP the job checker!Relax, Breathe, Love 2014 Challenges:Cross Stitch Cafe Challenger 23. Frugal Living Challenger. Using and reading the MSE email letter prompted me to check out my car insurance renewal quote. I have been a CSMA member and with LV=Frizzell for many years and on checking in the past they have always been the best deal.
However.... even checking on their own site gave me a quote for £375 less than I had been quoted for auto-renewal. When I rang them and queried this they said is was because they had "newer products" that could work out cheaper. Yeh maybe - but not £375 surely!
Well went through it all with them and got a "new policy" with exactly the same cover and excesses for £250. This is for fully comp on a Jaguar XK.
Very pleased and so glad I took the MSE advice not just to accept auto-renewal. Many Thanks!0 -
For the past two years I've followed MSE advice and made sure I've cancelled the automatic renewal and searched price comparison sites after my car insurance renewal quote has come through (for some reason the renewal quotes for the past couple of years have been more than the previous year despite no accidents or changes of circumstances- weird eh?).
After finding a better quote I've phoned my insurer and have asked them to match it, they do their computer voodoo, find my new online quote (?!?) and on both occasions have knocked even more money off it by taking further information you can't put into the online search engine
I think it helps that I'm with Elephant insurance and a lot of the cheaper quotes I get are with their sister companies.
I can't remember the exact figures but for the past two years I've knocked £75-100 off my renewal quote doing this.
Probably still pay more on insurance than a fair number of people, but being under 25 and living in a city accounts for that!
Anyway, thank you MSE!MFiT-T4 #75: £142,480 to £86,700 by Jan 2019

Are we as customers loyal? I fear not.
If they gave the best price every year, I would assume that these great deals would be hard to find because no one would be paying the higher prices.
Good luck to those who make the effort to search and seek the best price, I am though grateful not many do!0 -
We managed to save over £200 this year.
Renewal quote from Admiral for 2 cars = £575
Privilege 1 car = £190
M&S 1 car = £160
Total = £350 minus £30 cashback = £320
Total saving = £2550 -

There are plenty of people who auto-renew their policies. What I meant was if you are loyal to an insurer by auto-renewing with no accidents etc. your policy should be lower but as that isn't always the case, it forces people to look elsewhere for the same terms.
Take my policy for example. I was with Elephant and they have (or their sister company Admiral) have consistantly been cheapest for me until this year. I hadnt had any accidents or incidents yet my renewal went up almost £200. So I left and went to Esure for £70 less plus £60 cashback, at the time, through Quidco.English by birth.
