Don't throw food away challenge

Hello all,
My previous total was £2.00 I need to add on an orange which was 30p, so £2.30
The reason I bought the orange was because the Christmas Cake called for orange yest. But we don't normally buy oranges so of course I wasted it  Worst of it is, that I doubt very much the yest would have made any difference to the cake anyway.
December challenge needs to be less than £2.30
We have a cucumber which I could see going the same way, but I've been looking in my cookbooks and I've seen a receipe which calls for cucumber to make a sauce to pour over fish. It can be frozen as well, so I think I shall make that and save it for the summer.
Before I would have thrown the cucumber away  :T0 -
I'm going to join you for December if I may. Lots got thrown away in November because I came down with a bug and wasn't cooking. Setting a target of £5.00.GC Mar 13 £47.36/£1500

Running total was £3.55.
Muller Yogurt - frozen, put in fridge to defrost a little to make it more sorbet than icecube like, forgot about it. Howver, thanks to an Asda glitch it was only 9p.
1 aubergine, say 25p - a small one from a Tesco Value bag.
Cut end off cucumber, around 0.5cm, say 3p.
2 frostbitten rolls, 40p.
:j:T:jTOTAL FOR THE MONTH £4.32 :j:T:jA positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effortMortgage Balance = £0

Yay! Well done everyone!:T:T:T
And thanks to all who have posted - I would have never even blinked an eye about throwing food in the bin over a month ago- but now I always try to think before it goes in the bin...........I even cooked the raw prawns that went out of date on Saturday and ate them for my tea and I have a really sensitive stomach, but they smelt fine
BUT........ if I am very poorly during the night I shall think only that I have saved myself 49p(whoospie on Sat) and not that I am a scardy cat when it comes to being ill!

Think I need to up my amount for next month :-(. I aimed for £5, & though I've not kept track properly, it's got to be more like £8... I know we'll do better next month as DS1 won't be getting up too late to eat before school in the Christmas hols... So less wasted porridge. I'm experimenting to make a cereal bar he'll eat so he can take it & earth on the bus, but going to bed at a good time will make more difference.0

OK, final round up -- we were on £6.61. 'Oh, I threw out some mouldy oranges' said DH; that's another 60p. I had a red onion and a white onion that were a bit dodgy on one side, say 15p. There was some dripping that had been in the fridge for entirely too long; probably doesn't really count because I used to throw it away, but I'll have to use oil instead so say, 10p. The maple syrup has gone mouldy! But there's a page on the internet that says how to recover it so I will have a go at that. Say 30p for the amount that's bound to get thrown away. And, tada, we come to the end of November, for a grand total of £7.46.
Thank you so much Squeaky, I've saved loads this month, and I've cooked all sorts of new dishes designed round what I had in. And we've even eaten up the Great Cabbage Mountain.
OK. Roll on December; a hard month, what with the Winter Festival of Excess, but let's say £8. Should be doable.Make £2023 in 2023: (all decluttering), current total £2860 me, £330 for friends & family, £468 charity donations.0 -
Possibly the month in the year where everybody wastes the most food, caught in the trap between supplying plenty of good stuff and not actually being able to eat it all.
First things first - enjoy your Christmas
So, apart from the usual tips about using things up - the one big tip that we came up with between us is to start running down the contents of the fridge and freezer to make yourself some space. Not just for all the extra seasonal goodies that you'll be buying - but for the inevitable leftovers!
Good luck everyoneDon't forget to join the December Grocery Challenge and work on your budget from both ends!

Hello all,
I'm sure I finished at £2.30 last month, so I'm aiming for less than that this month.
Since we insist that we don't go overboard at Christmas and its only ever us two, nothing should change this month. However, I found three plums in the fruit bowl a day or two ago. Aldi fruit, I can't say I should know better because I do know better, back to Sainsburys or Tesco for fruit. It might be more expensive than Aldi's Super Six but not if I'm going to throw it away.
Acutally I don't think it was a Super Six so I'll guess at 80p a punnet since they are £1.00 in Sainsburys.
I'm going for 50p wasted. - They did go in the compost heap but we could have eaten them as well.0 -
Hi,
I'm back in again this month.
November was quite good I think - I did lose track a bit but hardly threw anything away. Much better than normal.
I have family here for three days over Xmas and will have to supply everything they could possibly desirebut will try hard to stick to using things up before and after the event. I'm a veggie so if there's any meat left over it will bulk out the dog's food or go home with my mum (who won't throw anything away!)
Been shopping today and have not had to throw anything away from the fridge on restocking it. I have found a bag of apples that could be used for stewing rather than chucking - will do this later I think.
I'm even trying to use up every dreg of shampoo, conditioner and moisturiser before buying more and not wearing expensive foundation on the weekend if I'm not going anywhere. I always have a load of toiletries and make up etc for Xmas so will try to live off what's in the house for the next 3 weeks. I think I'll only need shampoo and maybe a deodorant to get to the big day!0
