Awkward situation - don't think I can say No.

  • I'm honestly astonished by how much people appear to care about buying stuff for their babies, and a sentimental attachment to the whole lot.

Most of the clothes my son wore as a baby and young toddler were second-hand. Isaac wore, for example, a cardigan that my great-grandmother knitted for me when I was a baby - I wore it, my sisters and brother wore it, Isaac wore it. It's quite sweet to see the photos of us all in it, to be honest!

Why the problem with second-hand babygros or vests? Isaac wore loads of those. The ones my mother had kept from when we were babies went back to her for other future grandchildren, others were passed on to mates, etc.

I lent most of my baby stuff to my best mate - a walker, a swing for the door, baby bath, all sorts of things. It's not made of gold and diamonds, it's just "stuff", and better used than gathering dust in an attic somewhere.

I can't remember any particular massive thrill about buying pushchairs and car seats. Again, they are just "stuff". Apart from things where safety matters (such as a cot mattress) babies don't need new things, they don't care at all.

I'd happily lend anything I had for Isaac to my sisters.

  • And gosh I LOOOVED buying the things for my first ..she doesn't know what she's missing out on!

Why? No big deal for me.

  • It might be just stuff to you neverdespairgirl, doesnt mean everyone feels the same way or should do. There are many reasons why things are precious to people that others would never 'get'.

  • But how can all baby stuff - baths, nappy buckets, walkers - be precious?

  • They can be. Anything can be especially where babies are concered. Ok a nappy bucket might be stretching it - I couldnt have parted with dd's bath, its a mini frog pond now but it's still there!

Maybe some of us are just more sentimental than others - I think thats a good trait to have personally.

My cousin wanted to buy my baby things when my daughter was 18months old and she got pregnant, I too like you thought I may want another baby in time. I said no I didn't want to sell things and each year that passed and I still didn't have another baby to use the things people thought I had been awful in not selling or loaning my much loved items. Well when my daughter was four and ahalf my son was born and guess what all my things got used and they was still like new, I even bought new wheels for my pram and buggy.
So do what you feel is right, your things may not be looked after like you would after all when something have not cost you then you don't know the value of things and take pride in then.
If you don't want to share your things then don't feel pressured to do so.
Why pay full price when you may get it YS ;)

What ever has happened to being a family? You admit yourself that your sister has been good with your kids with both time and money, yet now when it comes to her asking you for something you are more worried about a few objects rather than helping out your sister. Both myself and my sister are parents and I would give her anything I could to help her out and I know she would do the same. Surely that is more important than if you get your pram back with a couple more stains on it. Maybe i'm just more easy going but if I am not using it at that moment then I don't see any harm in lending it out and using it again when I got it back.
  • OP I'm with you on not wanting to lend it out. Your next child will be having 3rd hand belongings instead of 2nd hand stuff that you've lovingly cared for. I honestly think your sister will be less offended than you think if you just say you're feeling a bit emotional about all the stuff.

  • ^ forgot to say, the sooner you say this the easier it will be.

I don't rate sentimentality as a positive trait. Emotion, yes. Sentiment, no.
