We're 15 months into an 18 month deal with Orange via Phones4U. Last month I had a call from the store we bought the phones from inviting us in to discuss an early upgrade FOC. We went in at the agreed time and were told they had no knowledge of having rung us. They went through the process of phoning Orange and we'd have to pay £100 + VAT to upgrade. That's not quite free then. Phones4U said they'd pay the £100 if we paid the VAT. No apology. I said I'd think about it and left.

Last night I get a call from Phones4U's call centre saying they wanted to do a tarriff review and get us onto another deal. I recounted my experience in the store and expressed my annoyance at it. He tried to give me some waffle about it being passed up to Head Office so I pointed out that my experience makes me less inclined to line their pockets for another 18 months. His tone changed dramatically and he informed me 'You have not paid us a single penny'. How remiss of me, I didn't realise that Phones4U are a charity, there was me thinking they got a cut from Orange for me signing up. Needless to say I wasn't about to get into a slanging match and hung up. He rang me back 3 times until I finally told him very clearly not to ring me again. He didn't.

That'll be me looking for another deal with an alternative company then.

I have just discovered that my reclaim to 4U has been lying in the Royal Mail for two months . Can 4U avoid a claim due to this point?

2.2 Phones4u cannot accept responsibility for applications lost or delayed in the post. Proof of posting will not be accepted as proof of delivery.

    What is my recourse ?

    Royal mail?

You have no recourse with anyone really. If your claim did not arrive then phones4u cannot pay out your claim.

Any claim to Royal mail for standard post (which is what recorded delivery is) can only be for the actual material value of anything sent in the envelope up to £34, unfortunately the value of what you sent was a sheet of paper, so no the Royal mail will not pay you out anything except maybe a book of stamps for having a delay in dealing with the letter.

I have a cashback contract with them. So far I have had 2 payouts without any problem. Much better than e2save, the claim form tells you a claim date and you simply send in the latest bill you have at that date. They send you a cheque and a claim form for he next claim.
  • If They Can They Will Mess You Around, Ive Just Had To Fax Them My Bank Statements To Prove I've Not Been Paid After Many Calls & Rants In The Shop, By The Way Do You Think Faxing You're Details Is A Data-protection Issue?
  • I Have Seen A Web Deal With Phones4u On Nokia 6300 With Vodaphone .9 Months Free On A 12 Months Contract(£50 Quidco)
