She right clicked on Computer and then clicked on properties - it showed 'System Type' 64 bit operating system.
She also pressed start and typed 'ms(something)32' into the box and that produced the same information.
(I can't be more exact because she lives 80 miles away but the second check info came from an email she got from software4students.).
She downloaded the 64bit version and when she tried to fire it up it said she had a 32bit operating system.
She deleted that and checked again that there were no office programs to uninstall. She downloaded the 64bit version again and got the same result.

I have got the product key and will download the 32bit system as you suggest.

Most strange. Has she had any versions of Office on there before?

Is there any chance you can get a your daughter to upload (or email you) a screenshot of the error - specifically?

Is the error happening when you enter the license key, in which case is it possible that the key is a 32-bit key?

There's no such thing as a 32bit key. The key (license) can be used irrespective of the architecture type (64b version or 32b version). This error (if it's the one I'm thinking of) will appear before you even get that far.

OK - I didn't know that the key wasn't version specific.

Assuming that is the case, then why not just download the 32-bit version and install that, then?

I'm guessing that's what will happen (as also per my recommendation at the top of the page).

I'd like to know the error though as I think it's simpler than that. I think the error is moaning that there are 32bit office components installed.

She has downloaded and fired up the 32bit version without any problems. Thank you all for your help. My recommendation to anyone would be to get the 32bit dvd version regardless of the version of windows that you have and leave the 64 bit download alone

Hi, Happy New Year - it seems ages since you all helped me out loading Microsoft Office Professional Plus on my desktop. I am now needing to load this onto my daughters new HP laptop. From what I can see Office Starter 2010 is pre-loaded, it says its not a trial but includes adverts also there is something called Microsoft Silverlight (whatever that is). The download I purchased from Software4students gives 2 downloads.
Please can you tell me if I just follow the same links in posts 16 and 31 that I used for my desktop? Don`t want to mess anything up...or should we just click on the Office Starter and let her use that?

Any help would be very much appreciated. Many thanks

HI, please can anyone advise? don`t want to delete something that might be ok...but can use the Microsoft office professional on two computers. I really hate having to do stuff like this with a passion! wish I had been taught `computers etc` at school. Thanks
