I`ve been reading lots of postings re Microsoft Office and see that there are quite a few who recommend software4students, I have a 14 year old daughter so this is great.
Just have a couple of questions and was wondering if anyone can help:
I think our new desktop is 64 bit but don`t know where to look to find this out, can anyone help its a HP pavilion slimline bought 3 months ago.
If its 32bit you can buy the discs, if its 64 bit you get download with link to 64 and 32. Does anyone know once you make a purchase how long it takes to get the download from them?
Has anyone purchased this by download and did it work OK? (as many of you know I`m not at all technical...was it easy to do?)
At the momet I have the free 90 days microsoft office or whatever it was that came pre-installed but think its going to finish very soon.
As always I`m grateful for any advice and help.

To find out exactly what type you are using - Go to control panel and click on System. Next to system type: it will say whether its 64 / 32 bit OS.
If you need to download, you will get taken through the download procedure once you get to the download stage. Its relatively simple, and if you do get stuck on one of the points then just ask here

Hi, thanks for replying so quickly its 64 bit.

I went ahead and ordered the dowload as it covers 64 and 32, had an email immediately with the dowload info. I understand my first job is to uninstall the trial version I currently have so have decided to wait until my daughter comes home to give me a hand.

I will be back to confirm I have managed the installation or to grovel for more help.

Unless you need the superlarge spreadsheets and similar that the 64 bit allows then stick to installing the 32 bit version. There is also a problem with quite a few add-ns are not 64 bit compatible.

For the standard user 64 bit gives no advantage over 32 bit.

For future reference, if you're not in a hurry, software4students will send the software on the original DVD at no extra cost rather than you having to download it. I've used them several times, as my kids schools insist on certain software, and been very pleased with the service and prices.

Microsoft currently recommends that you install the 32-bit version of Office on 64-bit Windows (and, of course, on 32-bit Windows!)...

Thank you all, I thought as it was 64 bit then thats what I needed, Otherwise would have gone for the discs which I would have preferred. Never mind its downloaded and I`ve got the product without waiting for it (think the free one will finish any day and didn`t want to be left with nothing).

This is confusing ...doesn`t take much. So even though I have 64 bit computer the 32 bit will work ok? just don`t want to do it wrong as we need the other use for the new laptop my daughter is getting for Xmas. Large Spreadsheets! don`t even know how to do a small one..lol

Price was great, I didn`t realise I would get the download as soon as I had finished pressing the order button. I nearly went to Currys / Staples and paid £90+.

yes the 32 bit will work on your 64 bit laptop,

Thank you all, I`ve not looked at the download info yet. Does it make it clear 32 and 64 bit? as don`t want to download the 64 when you have all advised me the 32 is a lot better...need to be 100% sure on this and what I`m doing before I start. Wish I had a computer expert who lived in the wardrobe and I could just get them out when I have to do anything difficult!

I know this is a daft question but I`ll ask anyway... why do they bother to give a 64 bit download if the 32 is better and this loads onto a 64 bit computer - if that makes sense?

The 64-bit version of Office could be classed as 'in development', or 'didn't work quite as well as Microsoft thought it would'. In a couple of years' time, when further tweaked, it will probably be recommended for use on 64-bit boxes, but not yet. If people are feeling Really Brave, or want to be pioneers, then they could try the 64-bit version. Otherwise, just think of it as an anomaly!
