    Hi all

We cancelled sky about 12 month ago now and bought a FREESAT system (on offer at the time)

We get about 1 call and 2 mailers per month asking us to come back! 9 month half price (as we were on full sub with them) is best offer yet and still expensive.

Our reason for cancelling was due to lack of funds, mortgage or sky, we are financially better off this year but would not go back now.
  • I gave 31 days notice to Sky on 19th December. I have been with Sky for 20 months and always had a half price deal however this latest deal finishes 19 Jan so that's why I gave notice. We only really use sky for the live pause, recording and watching Sky 1, we don't bother too much with the other channels so that is all we will miss. I am considering getting a FreeSat box but will miss Sky 1, I've called today to reconfirm my cut off date hoping they would give me another half price offer but they haven't. Has anyone got any hints on trying to get another deal, I don't want to buy the FreeSat box and then find I'm given an offer after cut off date. We can't afford the full price at the moment, I explained this to Sky when I cancelled, I'm also tied to BT for my landline as I paid for the year upfront in November. Any suggestions? :)

Errr not boastful but very happy to get money off!

60% of total subscription to sky tv (don't have broadband or telephone with them)
Cancelled subscription approx 20 days ago when offered 50 % for 6 months to stay - turned them down -( so have not actually been without sky )
Lovely man telephoned up - told him cancelled due to lack of funds and he offered me 60% off total subscription for 12 months so I am a very happy bunny

Edited to add an no further contract required

Hearty congratulations! At 60% and with less than seven hours to go, you look like being the Sky Percentage Discount Champion of 2011.:T

Thanks for giving the fuller breakdown and details. Much appreciated.

And please believe that I never perceived you to be boastful: I was just pointing out that your posting, when read by strangers, could give the unfortunate appearance of boastfulness – which I qualified by adding that I didn’t believe you to be! :)

With a 60% discount for a year, at the end of it Sky would be asking you for a 150% increase to return to full tariff!

Do make sure, nonetheless, that Sky has indeed duly registered its offer as a discount to you of 60% and not entered it as a deal for you to pay only 60% of its normal tariff for a year. Sky can be deviously tricky.

Recently, the pattern has been that those who cancel and go through with it usually get a half-price-for-a-year offer after going without Sky for a couple of months.

But there’s no knowing if that will continue, nor for how long. :undecided

Even at half price, a year of Sky’s most basic package would cost you £120.

At full price it would cost you £240 for a year.

And if you want Sky in HD, that’s a further £120 a year.

Is Sky One really worth that much to you?

If you buy a Humax FoxSat-HDR box, you get twin tuners, like a Sky+ box (which the fact that you write you want to “keep” the live pause and recording features suggests that you have now; so you’ll already have a twin feed from your dish), a recording facility to an inbuilt hard drive and all the other features to which you are accustomed.

It will also give you four (so far) channels of HD, free.

If you shop around, you can buy one for less than £200.

That’s right – a FoxSat-HDR costs £40 less to buy outright, once, than a year of Sky’s most basic package. And it is HD – also free to watch.

If you don’t see that as a no-brainer in itself, consider the position you’ll be in this time next year: nothing to show for having paid Sky money for a year and facing a further year or more of paying Sky money. With FreeSat you’d have nothing to pay at all.

Nail the beast now and stop paying Sky money. Sky One isn’t worth endangering your finances to watch.

If you really must continue with Sky, don't ring Sky again – it makes Sky think your resolve is weakening and that makes Sky less likely to offer you a discount. Stay resolute, now, and make Sky blink first.

  • I am prepared to pay £10 per month for the use of the box and Sky One but no more, otherwise we will be buying this http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0039J42LM/ref=ox_sc_act_title_2?ie=UTF8&m=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE. I don't want to wait until Sky have pulled the plug as we really will miss the live pause and rewind, we're always using with doorbells going, dog wanting to 'go outside' ect, so I guess I'll give it until a week before Sky finishes and then buy it, if Sky contact me later than that it too late for them. Thanks for your help Gratis :).
  • I have several family members who all work for SKY.
and my sister and brother tell us the latest deals , new items coming out etc.
And my brother and sister have told us several times that SKY now have a limit to how many times an account holder can call and cancel there subscription and if you reach this limit or are over then yes they will close your account on the system with no questions asked and no offers.
my brother told us recently that they will be charging a 1 fee for HD multi room of £10 i think it was he said as we have HD in 1 one and non HD in an other. as he said we should look into it more because i can get SKY HD in my bedroom at no extra cost.
But not much point when i use SKY GO on my pc anyway even though you cant watch all channels of that.
and all of those who have SKY HD will get the new F1 channel in HD for absolutely no extra cost as my brother was saying he cant understand what SKY will get out of it because its free to anyone who has SKY HD and there will be no adverts during the race as they were being told more about it.
And he is currently testing a new thing for SKY at the moment where you get tones more space on the box to record.
  • Happy New Year Gratis :D

From the figure payed each month confirmed with sky its definately 60 % off - had to think about it for a moment though!!

I guess I just fell really lucky, I was very nice to the man wishing him a Merry Christmas when he told me he was from sky, then he looked at my account and offered me the discount.

I have no idea why he offered me such a good discount but I am very grateful

I can see Sky losing a few people in this way. We only tend to use it for the Sky+ features and the odd movie. Once we are disconnected we will have found other means of recording TV so Sky's job of getting us back will be alot harder.
Hark at you going all strict :D
  • Got an email from Sky this morning confirming my cancellation and saying I should call them as they have offers for me, I did this and the only offer there was for a free line rental *rollseyes*, I told then no thanks I'm in a contract for my phone and that I will be buying a freesat box at the weekend.

got the letter through this morning so am going back at half price for a year which is fine by me as I would have stayed at 25% off. Cancelling sky has in essence saved me about £50 a month. due to changing broadband and phone now also. One thing was though that Sky owed me about £15 after my last bill and because it is under £20 then it is down to me to phone up! I had this once before with T Mobile years ago and thought this type of thing had stopped but i will be writing to the regulator as this is disgusting if you ask me.
  • Both my mother and I have phoned, Sky, explained we cannot afford to continue etc, andhave both been offered £12.25 off x12months (effectively the telephone line rental).

Yet my best friend, who has been with sky longer than both my mother and I, and has a fuller package, has called twice with no success at all!

It seems to be very random.
