I've been playing with iOS5 for a week or so now and thought I would start some likes and dislikes.

People saying that it is just playing catch-up with Android, need not read any further.

    Likes:

iMessage is very good, free and quite quick

Wireless Sync with iTunes is spooky, quick and useful

iCloud with 5gb/data is pretty good

Notifications. I like the way I can pull down the messages from any screen and that I get notified even when playing games / full screen app.

All of the above makes the iPad a bit more useful

    Dislikes:

Notifications in the lock screen. Doesn't show as much as it could/should. Go look at LockInfo Apple...

I'd have to disagree with some of the above. What you've written is all information that can be obtained from reading apple's website about iOS5 for the past few months...

Wireless sync seems flawed. It's not really wireless because the phone needs to be plugged into a power source. Also, the option to sync is 3 menus deep (Settings >General > Wireless Sync > Sync now) which makes it annoying. To be honest it should be automatic syncing when in wireless range providing there is less than X amount of data to be synced. Being able to use the phone whilst syncing is nice though (can still do this even if going it via USB)

    iMessage is superb.

Can't use location based reminders if you have reminders synced with Microsoft Exchange - only solution is to unsync them.

iCloud is useless without a mobile me address. You have to create one (fair enough) but to use any of the cloud services you have to also install the mobile me mailbox. Very annoying. Manually removing the mailbox removes all iCloud services - including photo stream and phone backup.

The notifications are great and you can add more info with the settings by enabling "Show Preview".

Newsstands seems annoying because you have to also download a standalone app for any companies whose magazines you want to download. Might as well just keep them as separate apps and do away with newsstand.

Location-based reminders are solid and work well.

I can't remember if I could do this before but I can now create new folders within my mailboxes - very nice feature.

Camera from the lockscreen is nice too. Also very secure in that if you use it...it won't let you browse existing pictures if the phone is locked with a password.

iCloud doesn't sync with my Microsoft Exchange contacts.

Twitter integration is nice and makes a nice chirping noise when you tweet. I don't use Twitter though and would like to be able to remove all the Twitter related menus (Share via Twitter etc).

Red-eye removal is very fast but only works on red eyes. I know it sounds silly but I have a few pictures where the eyes are just very bright and not necessarily red. When you click the area to fix it just says "no red eye found".

The photo cropping is excellent. Far better than any third party app I've used.

All in all a solid upgrade but mobile me/iCloud integration just seems messy and confusing. I'm not even using it now. True wireless and automatic sync would be a very welcome change.

Pity iTunes Match doesn't seem to be active yet.

edit: I forgot to add. You can manually add folders for photos. But I don't see anyway to move existing photos into these folders. Therefore it seems like a useless feature.

How can you tell how fast it's going?

Instead of time going down, it's increasing every minute or so... 44 minutes to go apparently - no, wait, 45 minutes...

    88 minutes to go now....

To sync wirelessly you can select the device from iTunes, click on the right hand mouse button and 'Sync Now' or from the device go to the menu that you mentioned and touch 'sync now' (doesn't need to be plugged in for both of those to work).

You can backup to the iCloud without an @me.com email address. You just can't back your mail up there, the rest will.

Hmm are you sure? As soon as I unplug it from iTunes it disappears. Also the "Sync Now" button is greyed out on the phone unless it's plugged into a power source...

My issue with regards to the cloud is that as soon as I activate cloud services it installs the cloud mailbox.

Absolutely positive. Have you ticked the 'Sync with this iPhone/iPad over Wi-fi' box in the Options from the Summary screen of the device when plugged in with the cable?

Yep. It still needs a power source.

Mmmm. Just loading the 'proper' iOS 5 and will let you know if it was just a feature of the GM version I was using.

How do you load the public release version? I've connected to iTuned but it says I'm on the current version.....
