How do you load the public release version? I've connected to iTuned but it says I'm on the current version.....

I backed up and then clicked on restore. That forced a download.

Plug in your phone, click on it (under devices, on the left hand side in iTunes). When it comes up with the summary click on update (or check for update)

I'd have to disagree with some of the above. What you've written is all information that can be obtained from reading apple's website about iOS5 for the past few months...

Wireless sync seems flawed. It's not really wireless because the phone needs to be plugged into a power source. Also, the option to sync is 3 menus deep (Settings >General > Wireless Sync > Sync now) which makes it annoying. To be honest it should be automatic syncing when in wireless range providing there is less than X amount of data to be synced. Being able to use the phone whilst syncing is nice though (can still do this even if going it via USB)

Totally not true, I've been able to sync my iPhone and iPad without being connected to a power source. I've also been able to backup to iCloud without being connected to a power source too.

    iMessage is superb.

I've only used this once and I totally agree. I was having a conversation with someone in Oregon (USA) and the speed in which the messages were delivered were awesome.

Can't use location based reminders if you have reminders synced with Microsoft Exchange - only solution is to unsync them.

I can't comment on that because I don't use MS Exchange.

iCloud is useless without a mobile me address. You have to create one (fair enough) but to use any of the cloud services you have to also install the mobile me mailbox. Very annoying. Manually removing the mailbox removes all iCloud services - including photo stream and phone backup.

I think you only need to create a MobileMe address for certain things like Mail and Contacts. I have these backed up on my Mac and don't wish them to be backed up in iCloud too.

The notifications are great and you can add more info with the settings by enabling "Show Preview".

Totally agree, I have set mine up to show notifications from Mail and Twitter only.

Newsstands seems annoying because you have to also download a standalone app for any companies whose magazines you want to download. Might as well just keep them as separate apps and do away with newsstand.

    Never tried this.

Location-based reminders are solid and work well.

Never tried this one either, I have no use for it.

I can't remember if I could do this before but I can now create new folders within my mailboxes - very nice feature.

Not sure on this as I've not tried it either.

Camera from the lockscreen is nice too. Also very secure in that if you use it...it won't let you browse existing pictures if the phone is locked with a password.

Brilliant feature, when I remember to use it.

iCloud doesn't sync with my Microsoft Exchange contacts.

    I can't comment as I don't use MS Exchange.

Twitter integration is nice and makes a nice chirping noise when you tweet. I don't use Twitter though and would like to be able to remove all the Twitter related menus (Share via Twitter etc).

I love twitter and use it a lot but I haven't found the twitter integration very useful at all, for me at least anyway.

Red-eye removal is very fast but only works on red eyes. I know it sounds silly but I have a few pictures where the eyes are just very bright and not necessarily red. When you click the area to fix it just says "no red eye found".

    Never tried it.

The photo cropping is excellent. Far better than any third party app I've used.

    Never tried this yet either.

All in all a solid upgrade but mobile me/iCloud integration just seems messy and confusing. I'm not even using it now. True wireless and automatic sync would be a very welcome change.

iCloud confused me at first and even then only the basics were available. I'm slowly getting used to it. Would I trust it to restore my iPhone back to the way I had it, inc putting all the apps in the correct folders? No! Mind you iTunes doesn't do a very good job at that either.

Pity iTunes Match doesn't seem to be active yet.

    This doesn't interest me.

edit: I forgot to add. You can manually add folders for photos. But I don't see anyway to move existing photos into these folders. Therefore it seems like a useless feature.

    Not tried this either.

Okay, so just updated my iPad to the publicly released iOS 5, restored it.

And I can quite happily manually wirelessly sync without plugging it in.

Okay thanks for the advice guys. Must be my GM version is limited will update you all later. Thanks again
  • How on earth do I get pages and numbers up in to iCloud. I've tried dragging and dropping like the instructions say but nothing happens. :(

Seriously, WiFi Sync was playing up for me earlier. I quit all my applications and restarted my MacBook Pro and it all worked fine again.

Got it! iCloud wasn't recognising that I already had 'Numbers' for iOS but a quick restart and the problem was resolved. :)

I can't even install it. Keep getting error 3200 on restore. Seems like a massive overload on the servers when validating the restore with Apple.
