I got my card today. I can't use it until 7th November.
I think it's not on for them to send it so early and expect me to "keep it safe".
As if happens I do have a safe in my house, but I still don't think it's reasonable.

Come on lisyloo, it's not so difficult - unless you are living with people you don't trust - just make a note on your calendar or diary with a note of where you've put it. Mine is just in a drawer, along with a bunch of other cards. Can't see the problem. It's safe enough. :)

Thought I'd just jump in and sound off - ok, only a little.

Got the email and all that stuff re changes and emailed Egg to advise that we are away on holiday for a few weeks, therefore wont be at home and asked for the posting of the cards and new pins to be delayed 'til we get back. We were told in no uncertain terms that this would not be possible and that the cards and pins would be sent out.

A flurry of emails later with us describing the obvious dangers of their actions and still no movement. All of this culminated in an an offer from Egg to escalate our concerns to a complaint to be dealt with by another department. We agreed to this and asked for email contact given that we are not home only to be told that contact would be by letter!

We have now waited 1 week+ for contact of which there has been none so we have just asked for our accounts to be closed.

What a performance and we are more than incredulous at the Egg/Barclaycard proposed actions.

Hey ho, not very good omens for the future maybe?

What do you normally do when a provider sends out a replacement card? Do you contact them and ask them not to mail you while you're away? Or do you just make sure you're at home for a couple of months before your existing cards expire?

It might be more productive to contact Barclaycard about this, rather than Egg, if you're really worried.

That's not what I meant (and no I don't an wouldn't either). I meant burglary.
If you have a note on your calendar as to where it is then I wouldn't call that keeping it safe (not from burglary).
Telling burglars where you put your valuables could be seen as negligent by some insurers who will do anything to wiggle out of claims.
I don't think you have thought it through.
You have some responsibility to keep to keep it safe and personally I don't think you are doing that very well and possibly negligently.

No it's not that hard to stick it in my (hidden) safe for a month, but I have enough things to do without looking after their card for a month. Why can't they send them out at the right time? I don't think that's so hard either.
Maybe it is a bit picky but I jave a lot on my plate and can do without being responsible for other people's stuff.

I think all my (replacement) credit cards now get sent out a month or two early and can't be used until the start date is reached.
so no change for me here

I find it a bit inconvenient but don't see it as a security risk
  • Does anyone know if we will get paper statements or will it still be like Egg with online statements only? Can't find any info on this anywhere.
  • Got my pin today and the letter stating:
If you have any questions about your PIN or your new barclaycard, please visit barclaycard . Co . Uk/egg

You would have got a better response from barclays on the restriction of card being released... There should be an option on the systems that allow them to change plastics to '0'.. That's if they use a system called FDI/FDR (ex egg)

I for one would not be concerned about being away whilst cards are on their way.. 1. They aren't active until 7th November 2. If I was that bothered I would call the bank on that day to ask it to be restricted or a note left on system 3. In the highly unlikely event that your house is burgled (unless u live somewhere that this is rife) then you would be covered anyway.

I've just got rid of one barclaycard!!! I now have to decide whether IF or barclays will be my emergency card when I'm debt free next year.. Will see how it pans out!

    I find this disturbing!
  • Hi all....long time reader, first time poster!
Has anybody discovered whether positive balances will still be permitted and whether these can then be transferred to a current account at no charge?
I sent a message to Egg a few weeks ago asking the question and was told they did not know!

If you are away then the accumulating pile of regular and unwanted mail/junk mail would protect the card and pin.

There maybe over 1 million cards so staggering the delivery process makes sense.
