my Existing Money card expires at the end of this month but even if/when i receive the BC replacement it doesnt activate till the 7th Nov. i assume i will be effectively without use of the card for a week then?

I got a replacement Egg Money card about a month before the previous one expired (and the start date was 2 months before the previous one expired so there was overlap).

It could be that they have stopped issuing the old black "Egg-style" cards (though what if it was lost/stolen between now and 7th Nov?). At least you have your existing gold MC as backup.

Got my replacement barclaycards yesterday and noticed that the card for my wife and I have different last 4 numbers - first time I have ever had a credit card with an additional user that had a separate card number! Must be so they can differentiate between who made purchases.

If the new T&C do not allow a positive balance. What will happen to the money I have in EM on changeover day?

The existing T+Cs do not allow a positive balance. Although they appear to be tolerated.
I have a small positive balance on my egg card don't know for sure but am assuming it will be caried over to the new Barclaycard.
  • If I do a BT to my EGG card where I owe say £5k but I BT £9k will this be allowed? How could it be stopped. Would it be the card depositing the money (FD) or EGG that stops it? I just want to make the most of a short term First Direct offer. I could use the positive balance within a couple of weeks so not a long term positive balance.

Anecdotal evidence is that it's tolerated.
    How could it be stopped.
It's very easy indeed for a computer to do a simple sum and return the payment.
    Aparrently they don't do this.
It would be EGG returning the money. The other company have no access to your Egg money balance (that would be against the data protection act).
I could use the positive balance within a couple of weeks
Be aware your money is not insured.
So if your card was cloned and fraud was atttempted then Egg would not cover you for credit balances (they only insure their money not yours).
If it's very short term you might be prepared to take the risk, but it's something to consider as you could lose thousands.

That is all really helpful so thank you. It would literally be 2 weeks. I'll be buying a new kitchen which will be paid for after delivery and will wipe out any positive balance and put me back to me temporarily owing EGG money.
  • I just wanted to check if I were to try to transfer the money out into a bank account could this only be done if it were on the EGG money card rather than my other EGG card? I assume a positive balance can be on either? Annoyingly only the egg (rather than egg money) card has an outstanding balance.

I couldn't say as I've not seen any anecdotal evidence of people trying this.
Egg money was initially brought out as a hybrid credit/debit card.
You were meant to pre-load it after you'd be paid and then use it as a debit card until your balance went negative and then it performed like a credit card.
So initially it was designed to be put into credit.
They have changed the terms and conditions but apparently not the computer software to reject credit balances.

I have no idea what would happen on your Egg card.
There is a possibility the payment would be rejected as that card was NEVER designed for positive balances.
    So there is a difference.
It might work, it might not.

We know Egg money works because lots of people have tried it.

The special feature of the Egg Money card was that you didn't pay a cash advance fee on a cash advance taken from a positive balance.

If you're going to pay a cash advance fee, any card will do and you don't need a positive balance.
