Help!

i am currently receiving benefits for me and my son and was finding it difficult to pay the bills and what not so i asked for help from a guy i met and got it ever since then he has been sending me money to my account every week and i don't know if this is wrong because from what i know it doesn't say you cannot receive gifts from anyone whilst on benefits. i couldn't rely on this as a steady income to pay for my own housing benefit as he could just stop anytime is this wrong? i do not work, i have no partner living with me nothing about my circumstances has changed what so ever from when i first filled in the income support form apart from this....can i get in trouble? im scared.

As its an amount going in your bank every week then yes it counts as income. You will need to contact income support and housing benefit and they will want to see proof of all the amounts going in and will adjust your benefits accodingly and you will have to pay back any over payment that you wernt entitlted to at the time

i thought an income was when it is generated through work? you cannot earn an income from doing nothing that's not classified as an income because it is a gift from him to me he can stop any time it's just he CHOOSES to give me money which he can equally choose not to.

You seem to already know the answer to the question you asked, so why ask it in the first place?

Wee word of advice hun, very rarely in this world do you get something for nothing, please be very carefull about the signals your sending this chap. I just hope to god for your sake that someday soon he doesn't want some kind of return for his money...

Surely if he's contributing to your finances that makes you a couple in the eyes of the benefits system? Unless it's child maintenance he's giving you?
  • I wouldn't take what the person at the job centre said as gospel. When I phoned them asking if my son could claim JSA as he had just received a lump sum for a personal injury compensation payment I was told no. It was only when I asked on here :) I found out he was allowed. When I phoned the job centre they said oh okay I didn't know that we just give out general advice. I would have thought if this bloke was giving you money unless it was maintenance it would be classed as income. You don't have to work for money to be classed as income it can come from interest on savings or a trust fund from what I understand.
