They received my acceptance on 3rd September and so far nothing. I have phoned them every week and been told its still with calculations.

I filed a complaint with the Financial Ombudsman today, I have to give them 8 weeks to investigate further but they are happy to proceed.

Maybe we should bombard Halifax with FO complaints.

Reading through this forum Halifax appears to be dragging its heals longer than any other bank.

I think I will make a complaint too. I am in the same boat as you and I am fed up with the same old rubbish they feed you when you ring up and ask for an update. All other banks seem to be paying up, yet Halifax are taking an age to do anything. I too really dnt believe they are doing the calcs in date order. I have emailed the CEO twice already and still no reply. It will probably take then another 6 months to reply to my email.
  • ok just thought I would let you know that there is hope re the claims. I, as you lot are, was fed up with waiting and gave in and sent an email to that email address about 2 weeks ago. Not sure whether it has done anything however today I finally got my breakdown.

Does anyone know if there is an easy way to check if the interest calculation they have provided is correct? I did make a spreadsheet for myself to give me an idea as to what I should be expecting but their calculations works out less? Can anyone help with this?

It is a good chunk of money so I am pleased however just want to know whether this is correct before I accept.

Also my ppi claim was for mortgage and there has been no quible at all they upheld my claim from the outset. Oh there is a god!

So they took the full 16 weeks then? It looks like I'll be waiting until just before Christmas to hear anything.

I think you said you sent yours in beggining of Sept? if so they have 12 weeks to reply to you as at 31st August to 31st December and then after Jan it goes back to the 8 weeks.

Halifax have been a complete pain in the backside by automatically upholding virtually all complaints whether there is reason to or not. This has created a situation where people without a valid complaint are getting paid out. Whilst I am sure that the individuals appreciate it, it does make it awkward when responding to questions on this forum from people about if they have a case or not when you can see nothing wrong in the PPI they have, how it was sold or set up but then Halifax pay out anyway.

They have gone from rejecting as much as possible to upholding as much as possible to clear backlog.

    Dear Dunstonh

I had a valid complaint else I would not have raised this with my ppi provider.

My question was regarding the 8% simple interest calculation and how to check whether this has been calculated correctly, NOT, whether I had a valid complaint, yes or no.

Thank you for your comment although it did not answer my question!

I think the simple interest is calculated for each payment you've made, since you made it. Rather than full 8% on the whole amount that you've paid in one go.

So if your first payment against PPI was 4 years ago, that will have 4 years of interest.
The next payment, 3 years and 11 months ago, will have 3 years and 11 months of interest.

I've worked out that at the moment, using the this technique, the interest I should get on just my last loan, will be £579.47, but if I calculated it as 8% simple int. on the amount I've paid so far, then it would be £1143.00.

That's as far my my educated guess gets though, as that loan was the third or fourth in a refinancing sequence, that I have no amounts for any more, plus they're looking at my credit cards. At least I know my minimum should be around £3k.

Edit: mine was valid too, as it was front loaded on my loan, and I was told that I wouldn't get the loan if I didn't have the PPI. And until recently, I was also under the impression that the credit card PPI was compulsory.

  • thanks ccb

yes i have done a spreadsheet rough calculation and mine should be interest calculated for over 12 years? and i think their calculation is somewhat under even my conservative calculation

from reading peoples threads they can make errors and so i have called them to give me a breakdown of their calculation of the interest so hopefully it will be resolved

even if their calculation is correct its better than a poke in the eye with a blunt stick as they say
