Grrr! Was hoping for a quiet evening of well-earned relaxation but of course it never happens this way. Stupidly went and checked the latest vacancies in my field. Really stupid move because at a place I have long admired for its independence in the face of corporate slickness that is also located bang in the middle of the borough I know best they have just advertised a job. The job title and remit is identical to my current one. But due to it being Inner London and a higher pay range, the top end salary that I could be earning is a sizable 15k pa more than I am currently on.

It's not a bad problem to have - and I think I kind of know what I am going to do. And I think that the right thing to do is to be honourable. My current place took me on at my lowest, have promoted me rapidly back up the ranks to a position of authority and every time I have looked elsewhere they have come back with a equivalent or superior offer. I have played the cards that have been dealt to me well. But I think this will be one hand too many. Obviously the temptation of the money is immense, as is the lure of a place I have long admired, coupled with the fact that I have no fear in starting again. But I think there's a larger cost involved - I think the price I would pay is having my reputation (which is pretty high in my field) sullied with the stain of being a money-chaser. And longterm that may not do me any favours. Time after time at my current place I have had great courtesy and kindness extended to me, and I think it's time I start paying it back with some loyalty. Right, brainstorm over, I can get on with enjoying my wine.

Enjoy the wine Mr B, you deserve it :T
A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort

  • Well done mr b. I always say to only go for the money if you have no other financial option. In my very humble opinion, I think what's best for you right now is to carry on with what you're doing and consolidate your position work wise. Show your skills at this new higher grade and it will stand to you when you go for the next promotion.

Well said! Sounds like the right and honourable decision to me!

  • Well I certainly wasn't sure I'd be on here tonight - but the mug of tea has been drained, 6.7km of trundling completed and day 11 of the Ab and Squat challenge. Not bad considering I didn't get home from ferrying my daughter around til 9.30pm.

Another NSD / AFD. Tomorrow I want to go through all our old P60s on the tax checker, finally get hold of Sky, have a rummage around for cash, redo the totals on the spreadsheet to check we are still on track and list a few more things. Nothing sold from my listing frenzy of last week but I predicted as such - it was just good to get it out there - some of those records have now been listed six or seven times and I think I will just have to accept they are unsaleable.

Right, surely time for some sleep now. Pleased I got over another hurdle (the night off). Here's hoping these changed patterns of behaviour can become the norm.

A mere six hours after my last posting and the mug of tea and me are back on here again to proudly report another 6.6km done, and the 60 situps, 75 crunches, 40 leg raises, 55 seconds of plank and 130 squats that comprise day 13 of the Ab and Squat Challenges.

And I've managed to go through my tax history for the last 5 years and have found that I am not due any more repayments. However, there's certainly some malarky with the current year's tax codes and I have yet to go through Mrs B's P60 pile.

This all sounds a bit manic. I can assure you it's not. I'm not sitting here glazed-eyed and sleepless shuffling pieces of paper around and randomly breaking out into a spate of starjumps. Everything is very measured, very controlled, very ordered. My inner accountant will no longer be suppressed.

With regard to the ebay things that aren't selling, keep relisting them when it's a free weekend. I had a bid on something last night that's been on ebay for ages.

MrB turning down a potential extra £15k a year on principle ?. Shame on you. Go for it man. You won't be seen as a money-chaser. In fact, you are more likely to be seen as ambitious.

As the job is at a place you admire, then go for it. If you don't, you will regret it for the rest of your life.

I once read something that is so true. Never stay loyal to an employer as they will always treat new-comers better than you as you are seen as an un-ambitious employee.
