    Couldn't just read and run:
    1. Don't take it personally, paperboys aren't human. You can bet he was in a good mood when he woke up. Very suspicious.
    2. Deep breath. You know your job and you know what needs to be done, you've still got time to get the prep done. They gave you the job because they know you're capable - everybody takes a little bit of time to get their feet when they go somewhere new, and I really doubt you will be expected to behave like you've been there for years on your first day.
    3. 4 days in a row is a lot, you need to allow recovery time for your muscles 0 but plan it in so you don't end up using this as an excuse to slide. I started exercising again on Wed after almost two months off, and today I feel like I've been repeatedly kicked by a demonic paperboy - I'm very relieved that I've scheduled this as a "rest" day.
    4. That's me exactly - sometimes I feel like the more I exercise the more weight I gain! Losing weight is 80% diet and 20% exercise - but if you've been watching both then this is almost certainly a blip. I seem to remember that you like to weigh yourself everyday, fine but you need to be able to focus on the trends and not the daily changes.
    5. How often do you need a suit? Is it worth buying a second one just in case - you can get cheap suits that still look okay if you shop around? Do you know the make/size - you could try a similar one on just to get an idea of whether it will fit.
    6. In the current economy having any job is a bonus, a pay cut but a father who is happier at work is much more valuable to your children.
The point of anonymous internet is to vent sometimes - get it off your chest. And watch out for that paperboy!
Do you not know that a man is not dead while his name is still spoken?

Like it (and I'm going to see Springsteen in July:j), but I always imagined American muscle cars not 'jogging in the streets'...

Mr B given what you've overcome in the past a new job will be a walk (jog) in the park. But understandable to be nervous and probably doesn't look good to be too over confident anyway.
  • You're still there Mr B! You still have a job. You are still running. You're still not drinking! Feel the vibes - there's a lot of support for you out here in cyber land.

And do try not to weigh every day. It is a habit I am finding it very hard to kick and, as a result, have gone up and down by around 3lbs this week but the overall Slimming World electronic weigh in showed a loss of 1/2 lb. And that's the one that counts.

All that by 7.30? Crikey Mr B.

Am sure what the others have said about running is true (I haven't managed to run on 4 consecutive years never mind days :o), and it is certainly true of weight.

Can you buy a back-up suit which you can return if not needed? Do you actually need to wear a suit - is smart trousers and shirt not acceptable? What is suit like - am assuming jacket will fit? If it's a plain suit could you get contrasting striped trousers etc?

Plenty people have had to take large paycuts Mr B, that's a sign of the times, not of their failure. You have (mainly) your mental health back after a very stressful period at work and although things will be tough financially you and Mrs B will be in a stronger position to tackle it with you in a better place.

Re the preparation - try to stand back and look at it objectively - is this just new job nerves or something deeper? You have a few days more to prepare - I know teachers who've stayed one lesson ahead of the pupils, knowledge wise ;).

Onwards and upwards for the rest of the day.

PS paperboys are evil. Let's just leave it at that.
A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort

Thankyou, thankyou, thankyou. Was dipping in and out of the board at times today and really appreciated the wise words of advice. Today had been coming for a long time, the trouble with having any house guest for any period of time is that you cannot be 100% yourself, and coupled with it being Christmas, and the fact that I left my job of a decade without really being able to vent or breathe or talk about it meant there was a lot of pressure building up. Plus I knew I had to show Mrs B the new spreadsheet that we will have to be living by from the end of the month - seeing things in black and white, or rather in rows and columns always makes it somewhat more real, and while I've been living with the reality for a while I was trying my best to not let her see it until she really had to. But we're over that now, we will have to be frugal obviously and keep our eye out for any oppurtunities.

Mother-in-law goes back tomorrow morning (and the airport run forces me to have a day off from the running - which will help all the damaged bits of me to recover a bit.)

I am in a better place planning-wise for work and have dug out a pair of trousers that will fit me for Monday if the worst case scenario happens to be true that I have bloated out of my one good suit. I could go in dressed in sports jacket and chinos but I'm a great believer in dressing as the man I want to be, and I'm looking for promotions so the archetypal teacher gear will not suffice. Ironically enough I will likely come across as very corporate and slick, which I kind of railed against at my old place.

Total debt figure did go up, but not exponentially, and I actually think that we have got through this Christmas and all it's potential landmines quite admirably. Another dry day, and have just been on another tea-supported listing frenzy - and have 126 items up at the moment, all of them finishing next Friday evening. Adam Ant's sun visor is not among the items, I am holding out til next month to put that one up again.

You are great people on here and once again I salute you - thanks for getting me through today.
