Good luck in the new job MrB. Reminds me I need to complete and post a job application for a role as an ICT technician in a secondary school.

Big well done and Happy Christmas Mr B, since I last looked in you have done amazingly well.

As I said before it can be difficult to focus on just one thing such as debt clearance or weight clearance.

I've managed to conquer the debt clearance, but desperately need to get back onto the weight clearance, as it is most definitely creeping up and I've been far too lazy to do anything about it.
  • Seasons Greetings from Casa Bloater. Everything has been going well - and have got through without bankrupting ourselves. Must must must make use of this free listing period on ebay to kick start the extra money earning that I definitely need from the next pay packet onwards. Running will start once the rain stops and am looking forward to participating in the Dry January thing. Maybe I'll be contrary and start that on New Year's Eve.

  • All the decorations have gone, nobody's been strangled (yet) and the mother-in-law has only a week of her visit left. Today will be mainly concerned with finishing off the Christmas booze and any other goodies lurking around - the austerity drive starts tomorrow and even if I have to put my wellies on - I am darn well going out running. In an attempt to simplify my life I have started another thread (which will just add to my confusion) focused purely on how I am going to claw back the grand a month I am now down thanks to the new job, but looking at things holistically I need to get the following clear in my mind ready for the next year ahead....
    1) Reduce unneccessary expenditure
Groceries: Wine, Gin, Sandwiches in packets - your time has truly gone, anything on special offer has to be something we were going to get anyway. Thankfully my daughter is one of those annoyingly virtuous people who naturally like drinking water and eating fruit, the boy is just going to have to learn to live with reduced sugar intake. Mrs B will only be prescribed chocolate at times where I genuinely feel my safety is endangered if she doesn't get her fix and I'm just going to live on toast and good intentions.
Utilities: Will do the switching comparasion stuff again and look at all the tariffs and deals we are on for all insurances and blah blah but I don't think there is much there.
Bank: ensure DDs are set up for minimum card payments so that no nasty fees appear out of the blue, and then make extra payments as and when to balances and mortgage.

    2) Enhance existing and future career prospects
I never intend to get caught on the hoof (actually more like a rabbit trapped in the headlights of an oncoming train) like before, in addition to sailing as far as away from any breezes as possible, I need to keep my CV updated and keep my ear to the ground for any oppurtunities available in my field. Ideally I'd like to get a promotion back up the ranks at my new place, but cannot exist in a vaccuum like I did for the last decade. Although my reputation has already reached the new place I can't live on past glories and am going to have to ensure I don't get sucked into cynicism - I was thrown a lifeline and now need to climb back up the ladder pretty damn quick.

    3) Work on alternative income streams
This is the one that has led me down the river paddleless on a few occasions recently - whilst in a parallel universe there well be a braver more cavalier me who would throw himself fulltime in the risky business of writing fiction, performing stand-up comedy or doing some canny property deal that could net a fortune - that feller in the parallel universe doesn't have the same regard for the mental wellbeing of his wife and kids - my lot (and myself) need the stability, need the regular paycheck, need the paid holidays. I wish Parallel Bloater all the best in his endeavours to get the Aston Martin and be a millionaire, but it just ain't me - I don't have the inclination to find the time cos I'd be missing out on family life and that is worth more to me than any money in the bank (good thing too cos we don't have any).
So the only alternative income I can see myself realistically getting is continuing with my efforts to ebay the contents of the shed.

    4) Improve my mental physical and spiritual health
Like all men, I'm not the world's greatest communicator about how I feel - that's why I like this forum. Keeping this up, even if it is writing the same old blah, does wonders for my sense of venting and clarifying my thoughts and has quite likely saved me from a nervous breakdown at least once already.
Physical health is obvious - it's the running and the cutting out booze. And spiritual for me is just about trying to take some time out - do some yoga or listen to some meditation tracks.

If I do none of the above then I'll be a fool to myself and even further in debt. If I do some of the above then I'll be getting to a good place. And if I do it all, then I will have discovered that I am in fact, not human.

Happy new year to you and yours. See you on the 1st.
