  • But Custardy - running is fun, I get to see the familiar world at unfamiliar hours - it's unpredictable and the feeling of satisfaction when I actually do it is immense - plus it burns off calories at a Chernobyl scale. Swimming is just vile, plodding up and down in a pool full of other people's secretions - no thanks, and cycling involves bicycles which I can't abide for religious reasons.

And I have a very wise friend who extols the virtues of body weight exercises - in particular crawling around the patio on all fours. That doesn't seem very fun to me as there's slugs and bugs and cracked slabs and all that. Seems like a fast track to A&E and/or permanent mental scarring.

Have had an alcohol-free Friday night so as to have no excuse for not getting December off to a running start. Night all.

I agree,I like late night/early AM running myself
    however,you need to be realistic
Im speaking as someone who has had a miserable post op 12 months.
5 days a week at the gym plus body weight/mobility exercises at home.(and still broken!)
    I'm heavily limited,and it ain't fun
however that work has produced massive results(when compared to my starting point)
bodyweight exercises are massively varied, everyone can find one that fits
then theres the variety within each exercise
eg you can do the basic plank (which I find boooooring)
or you can maximise it by trying to pull you feet to your elbows within the plank position

Back from a 5k plod - thanks massively to custardy - I had to back up my staunch defence of running with actions. The "Feet to elbows" sounds like a position for an altogether different type of workout - I will consult Mrs B who is the yoga queen and if I get a slap then I'll know I'm being set up.

Put half a stone back on which is bad but not a disaster - glad to have recognised the rot and hopefully can now start stopping it - pushed me agonizingly back over the 22stone mark - to 22stone 0.2lb so no Christmas chocs or booze for me today. If, and it's a big if, I can confront the spreadsheet later I should also be able to update the debt figure, and this will then put me a bit more back on track. Bloater reloaded.

So Mr B - if I said I thought you should go down the DMP route would that spur you into action on the debt front ;)? Also, how about one of those nice meal replacement drinks diets to lose weight :D.

    Glad you're back :).

    How's the shed .

*Snorts with laughter at saucy Mr B* ... Get your next book written honey, I might be tighter than two coats of paint thanks to St Martin of Lewis, but I would definitely buy it (if it was less than a tenner, a girl has limits!)

Came back fron today's Sub-Arctic run 2lb down on yesterday so back in the 21s. Woo-hoo.

A strong no to the suggestion of Slim Fast and their ilk - that's not getting to the heart of the problem. And a more qualified no to the DMP - I think for us that would have to be the last resort and could well entail too many compromises - while I freely admit the prospect of bringing forward the debt free date would be amazing, I think I'd rather live 10 years of mild concern rather than 4 years of stripped-to-the-bone fundamentalist yoghurt-knitting

  • Mr B, I am a novice runner having only just completed couch to 5k. I had knee problems to start with and very nearly gave up.

Someone suggested I have gait analysis done at a proper sports shop that caters for runners. I found that I over pronate (foot turns in when I run) which is what causes the pain. Once I had a properly fitted pair of trainers with extra support, the problem stopped.

You may have already looked into this but if not then it's worth a try.

And so I have completed a totally alcohol-free weekend - which is rare, and even more so considering there are full bottles of Bombay Saff and Baileys sitting pretty in the fridge. Even typing that sentence out loud has not inspired my thirst so I must be taking things a little more seriously this time. Did the spreadsheet - pleasantly surprised at how our total debt has continued to fall, and also did some tinkering with an online tax calculator to find out roughly what my new salary should be - and despite taking a big hit in the headline figure - everything should be do-able, but certainly I have way more of an incentive to up the income now. Am off now into pastures new - am going to attempt to sort out and inventorise (not sure if that's a word - I guess it is now even if it wasn't before) the contents to aid Mrs B with meal-planning. Hoping this righteous zeal continues....
