    Re: the KA

you need two keys to program an extra key yourself but if you only have one then that is not a great problem as these keys can be cloned, usually at a cost between £50 and £70 depending on where you get them done

find a good local auto locksmith or specialist key cutter, they only take 5 to 10 minutes and will save you a lot of money compared to the dealership.

you don't need the key code as any good key cutter can decode these by eye

Hi. I bought a bora from an auction yesterday. It came with only one key. The remote does not work, only way to open the door is with key. The problem is that when the other doors are unlocked the alarm goes off. I have to start the engine to stop it. Its a big problem as I have little kids who keep getting frightened by the alarm.
Any advice is greatly appreciated. thanks.
It probably just needs a new battery in the remote. If the fob doesn't work it probably means that the car is still alarmed, but because you cant turn it off with the remote, when you get in the car it assumes you are stealing it! Once the key is in the ignition it recognises the immobiliser chip and deactivates the alarm.

Get a 2nd key asap though, as it will cost a fortune (even more than a new key!) to get two new ones and the car recovered to the dealer etc.

I need to replace a broken key for my Alfa 156. I have been given a cost, by the dealer, of £190. This is unbelievable..............
Their excuse is that the keys are computer chipped, no longer can you just go and get one cut.

I cannot afford this. Is there a cheaper alternative.

    You comments will be appreciated.

Go visit your local timpson branch, they can cut, code and program most car keys, everything a dealer will do but loads cheaper, they can even repair broken one`s, also a lot of talk about needing a 2nd/3rd key for programming is nonsense, there`s a lot they can do if you have no keys at all, its well worth a visit to them cause the help i received was truly invaluable and i saved a fair penny
  • go to timpsons, they will cut and program a 2nd key without needing
2 keys to program etc, it`ll cost around £30-50

  • The Alfa in question is probably a big pile of rust by now, and the key will be the least of the problems!

Yeah, it's an Alfa - getting a new key will be the last of his worries 3 years down the line!

despite it being an old thread, I have to mention timpsons are expensive and can usually only clone
    a key you have.

Causes problems late if one key gets lost or stolen you cannot remove it from the system as it
will also remove the cloned key.

  • i havejust bought a fiesta 2001 plate & it only came with 1 key which is a bit worn, i need to purchase a new one but ford are qouting me £120 + cost of key.

is there a cheaper way of doing it, i only have the plain black key not a master key.

    thanks
