Bobby Scotland - that sounds an awesome experience you had with the Ford guy who sorted out your car key for a fiver and saved you a whopping £70!!! Any chance you could paste his contact details here?
I managed to buy a second hand remote key from Ebay for my 51-plate Fiesta for around 8 quid and programmed the fob all by myself using info I found on the net Here is the link: http://autokeysquad.co.uk/ford-fob-programming It is a off a website for a company that comes out to your car to create new car keys there and then, but they also offer DIY guides for free. I could not afford a call-out even though they are cheaper than the dealers so went for the skint option and eventually puzzled it out for myself! Warning: you need a bit of time on your hands.0 -

The £167 ford quoted you didnt include the cost of you getting the car to ford or them reading the lock. It was for a spare key, they were assuming you were going to drive the car to them and give them your working key.
as above, go to a local autolocksmith.
We charge £120 to come out and supply 2 working keys. I guess most other lockies will be charging the same.
Good Luck0 -
I have previously lost my car keys to my ford focus and my husband lost his to his vw golf, we used a company called Cube Auto Locksmiths, these guys were fantastic they were really reliable and very knowledgable and also loads cheaper than the dealer and they came out to us so we didn't have to get the cars lifted as the aa were going to charge for this as well!! I have recommended these guys to all my friends and family. If anyone has any problems with their cars and keys give these a call.:rotfl:0

any one have suggestions for a 2002 bmw 3 series e46, only with 1 key and wanting a spare
Ive managed to change the battery in my old one, but other than dodgy chinese reprogrammer systems, no one seems to be able to do them other than bmw them selves... not as bad as the alfa at £1350 -
I would never, ever plug a dodgy chinese (copied/stolen) machine into a customers car. We hear lots of horror stories thru the trade where part-time auto locksmiths have plugged in and sent the customers ecu's to elecronic heaven.
Good luck0 -
The problem with losing one key fob, if it is a transponder type key fob, is that they have to reprogram the remaining key fob, the new key fob, and the car's ECU itself.
I have a 2005 Volvo station wagon, and it does not really have a key, it has a key like thing that you put into the ignition, and it uses the transponder to decide if the right key is installed. The key fob also has a "blade" or regular type key that will open the car if the battery is dead.
The car's ECU menu will tell you how many keys have been made for the car.
Losing or breaking a new car key can be an expensive proposition, and the reason for it is many fold. Security, proprietary software and design and dealer involvement can send the cost of a new key fob into the three hundred dollar range, and easily.0 -

When I was a kid my Dad broke the key to his Ford Corsair. He gave me 50p and told me to cycle down to the nearest garage for an "FT171". Today we pay a premium for better security but that's also an opportunity for dealers to make a tidy profit when we're in trouble. Can I help?0
