Been very good so far, only had to waste the peelings from the fruit and veg(they go into the compost), but not sure how long this will last?.Grocery Challenge 2013: July week 1 £90/£87.41

I'm going to see how many days i can go without throwing any food away.
Would anyone like to join me with this challenge?
I can't. I never throw food away, except 1/4 of a sliced loaf every 2 weeks or so.
I specifically buy what I can and will eat. I check best before dates and look at what I have in the trolley to make sure that I will definitely eat it all before it goes off.
I don't have a freezer either, so I have to really think about everything I buy. Then I have to eat it in date order!
Lack of waste starts with what you're buying.
I even ate the very failed two loaves I tried to make (and failed at) in my new breadmaker.
I throw peelings out, but I do peel them very thinly and live in a flat (no garden/no compost thingy)0 -

I have a problem with jars of ingredient stuff with short sell by dates. We opened a jar of wholegrain mustard to use one teaspoon in a recipe and the jar says keep in fridge and use within 4 weeks. The same applies to creamed horseradish, pesto, tahini etc. Has anyone any ideas what to do about these problem jar stuff?
It sounds harsh, but don't buy it in the first place.
I always read the labels and if something's got a shelf-life that is shorter than I think I can use it in, I don't buy it.
Especially in a case like this, where you needed 1 spoon of it for one recipe; I'd have just not put it in at all. The dish is unlikely to be THAT different with missing it out.0 -
Oh it is so yummy.
I did cheat though and did it in the bread maker because that way I could forget about it and get on with the other things I was bakingDD1 is so fussy with her jam but she has tried it and loves ot too. :j :j
Thank you so much for posting the recipe.
Have a Battenberg Cake in the oven at the moment - never tried to do one before but need to use up some marzipan I have in the cupboard and DH loves Battenberg
Hi...I dont have a BM but am fascinated to know that you can do jam in it- excellent. Does it have other uses?0 -
We are doing alot better with waste. Frozen veg means no waste there and meal plannning means we dont buy too much. Main problems are fruit and bread. Bread will freeze if we can find room!
Any ideas what to do with apples? Don't have a juicer0 -
Left over apples.... lovely smashed apple.
Cut up the apples into chunks, you can peel and core them if you want.
Put into large microwave-safe bowl.
Add tablespoon of water per apple/ or beer..or cider... or white wine..hence smashed apple:beer:
Blast way. (About 5 minutes is usual).
Cool slightly.
Puree through a sieve. Sweeten to taste.
(Core, peel gets left behind!)
Put into washed out yogurt pots.
Will keep for up to 10 days in the fridge or can be frozen.
Also ideal for lunch boxes ( in a pot with a lid, plus spoon.
Counts as 1 of your 5 a day.
Can be used with slightly bashed/tired fruit0 -
