...over 5 thousand chickens thrown away every day?...blimey...that is a helluva lot of chickens, but tell me, how do they know this??

Do they go thru peoples bins, or do they actually get people to admit it in a survey or something??

Has anyone on here ever been asked about what food they throw out and how often?

Sorry..probably not the right thread for this question, but it did get me thinking... :D
  • The report that details how they did it (all 237 pages) can be downloaded from here http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/shared/bsp/h...rt08_05_08.pdf

Basically, they did complete questionnaires with some people, but also physically collected rubbish and sorted it.

    Great job eh?

I bought some white cabbage & other bits for a family version of coleslaw we don't do mayo last week, so we're having that today with jacket spuds & cheese.

Tomorrow the remains will be stir-fried with some chopped-up whoopsied "sandwich" steaks I found lurking in the freezer to go into pittas that were hiding in a cupboard.

The biscuity-est of the fairy cakes from yesterday's baking sesh will be soaked in the juice from tinned fruit to make the base for individual trifles. The wilting rhubarb will be poached, added to tinned strawberries & put into meringue nests that had camped out in the drawer under my bed so they were safe for Easter!

Meant to say that I keep citrus fruit in a seperate bowl from apples, pears etc, & nananars on a tree. Read somewhere that the various fruits give off different types of fumes that will cause the other sort to go off quicker:confused: but have to say that the change has been very noticable. HTH.

Ok I know getting a chinese takeaway isnt very moneysaving but I managed to stretch 3 more meals out of the last one we got. Usually we would stuff ourselves with it, just cos its there and perhaps one of us would get a tub full for work the next day

1- we had got 2 starters, 2 mains, noodles, chips and curry sauce (between 4), we got some free mini spring rolls for spending over a certain amout. So me and OH had a bit of everything. The kids had chips, noodles and mini spring rolls.

2- OH took the left over noodles and remains of meal 1 to work and I ate the leftover starters the next day.

    3) With the curry sauce, the leftover peppers and onions from the prawn starter, the leftover veg from meal 2 (DS ate the chicken out of it...) I made a curry, by adding a sliced chicken breast, mushrooms and onions.

4)OH took the leftovers of meal 3 to work the next day.

So nothing major but I was quite proud of myself really.

or Bottom Drawer Soup... everything from the bottom drawer in the fridge goes in.
    Today's menu
3 potatoes, carrot sticks, leftover from lunches and were whoopsied originally
whoopsied stick beans ( brown bits cut off)
    3 onions
3 eddoes whoopsied to 9p... bit like hairy potatoes:cool::cool:
half a pepper (other half too far gone!)
    3 whoopsied chillies:eek:
    chicken stock from freezer
then all the spinach tops that have gone to seed from the garden

Verdict on the taste later today!!!
    Delicious...

Over-ripe bananas are a real cause of food waste in our house because nobody wants to eat them in this state. I noticed in the Lakeland catalogue today that there is now a Banana Bag which allows you to store bananas in the fridge and protects them sufficiently to stop the skins turning black. I'm not going to pay about £4 for such an item, but am going to try storing them in an old cotton pillowcase to see if that works. I imagine that even wrapping them in a clean tea towel in the fridge would serve a similar function. Has anybody tried this and does it work?

Apparently if you keep them in a plastic bag it works as well - I freeze the black ones till I have enough for a batch of chutney.
