Good point!
I used to have a problem with spuds. I kept them in the bag they came in , in the kitchen , in the light and they seemed to be spouting within a couple of days!
I've now started storing in one of those hessian shopping bags hung on a nail at the top of the cellar steps in the dark - good for ages now!
A definitive (but flexible - not everyones got cellars, pantries etc) list of food storage locations and techniques would be really good - I'm certainly sure I'm not getting it right:eek:0 -
I think this would be a really good idea:D
I now know that for potatoes, light seems to be the over-riding factor( although temperature does have a bearing). It would be good to learn from other's mistakes, rather than having to make them all ourselves:rotfl:You never get a second chance to make a first impression.0 -
Been reading this thread with great interest as I'm trying to throw as little food away as possible. I've been freezing peppers, citrus fruit, chopped onions etc, so doing quite well.
Someone mentioned they had lots of dessicated coconut (can't remember who, sorry) but that reminded me that I have lots of that too as DS only used a fraction in food technology at school. So rather than throw it away, I have googled a recipe to make HM Bounty Balls. Just need to buy some condensed milk and I'm sorted. I'll let you know if it's a success.

This was discussed on ITV1 'Tonight' last evening. The era of cheap food is gone for ever, apparently. People have grown used to spending a smaller proportion of their income on food than people did 50 years ago.
Re citrus fruit, occasionally one has gone bad before you have the chance to eat it. I think this is down to the way they are transported and stored before you even buy it. Not much fruit goes bad in this house, unless it's bad to start with (occasionally an orange), and we never have black bananas - they're not here long enough!Ær ic wisdom funde, ær wearð ic eald.

Ideal containers for freezing small amounts of liquid, if you don't want to use ice trays, are those little Benecol drinks containers. They have a nice firm cap on them too.0

No problem. Here is the recipe. Thought it best to do a link rather than copy the recipe out after the recent furore on this board about copyrighted recipes.(hope this has worked as its the first time I have ever done it.
)
So far mine is looking very like the inside of the "coconut-based" chocolate bar.In a couple of hours I will melt the chocolate and coat them.
