Well, my bread and butter pud made with my 'disaster muffins' was a resounding failure - according to all the other monkeys at our zoo.
I've eaten a good 1/3 of it - I thought it tasted quite nice - bit squishy in places - but then my b&b pud is always like that - funnily enough they don't like that either.
Anyway, I've done the only thing I could do and put it in the bin - having recently lost alot of weight and been maintaining for a few months now, I had to dispose of it before I ate it.
DD left 1/2 of her sandwich from her packed lunch - she often does this - so I have decided that from now on I will only give her 1/2. Then they won't end up in the bin.

does a bottle of paprika best before August 2000 count??
"Best before", for the purposes of this thread is "best ignored"
"Use by" is more important, but a lot of common sense can still be applied(things don't suddenly go off at the stroke of midnight!) as these often err on the cautious side.
Sorry if this is giving lessons in the proverbial lemon sucking!

Does anyone have a good recipe for making cordial? I thought it might make a change when I need to use up fruit?2019 fashion on a ration 0/66 coupons0 -
Tip for roast lamb leftovers!
We regularly have this the day after a lamb joint or chops.
Greek kebabs
Pinch Chilli powder
Tsp Oregano
Salt and black pepper
Quantity of leftover cooked lamb
Lettuce
Cucumber
Tomatoes
Pitta bread
Olive oil
Dressing such as hummus, raita, garlic mayo
Mix together the herbs, spice and seasoning in a bowl. Add the lamb and mix to coat.
Heat olive oil in a pan and gently reheat the spiced lamb pieces.
Meanwhile make a chunky salad and spread your hummus (or other dressing) onto toasted pittas. Fill with the salad and lamb. You can also add a squeeze of lemon over the top!
Yum! Taste better then takeaway kebabs!0 -
I grow soft fruit in the garden so often stew up a batch from the freezer. I also make stewed apple & sultanas, or stewed rhubarb & stem ginger and regularly find I have small quantities of cooked fruit left over which arn't really enough to make a dessert for two. These leftovers are ideal for stirring into a Chivvers Fruit Jelly (any flavour) before it sets, for making a light and interesting dessert. Odd wrinkled apples, oranges, grapes, etc. can be used in the same way but don't ever put PINEAPPLE into a fruit jelly because it contains enzymes which prevents the jelly setting.
Kiwi fruit also prevents jelly from setting.0 -
When using celery - it's gorgeous with 'philly' (or SmartPrice equivalent) spread down the hollow bit - or even that squeezy primula cheese spread!0

Grate and freeze carrot? What a good idea, I have loads of carrots in fridge just begging to be used (I've been ignoring them!). Do you have to blanch them or do you just literally grate and freeze?:o0 -
Not doing too badly, I report with shame that I had to bin a slimy bag of kid beans from the fridge, they'd got overlooked. Need to trawl freezer for all the bits and pieces I've lobbed in there, I think I need to do something with the breadcrumbs! If I have some stewed apple in the freezer, it will be 'scandinavian apple pudding' one of my faves. Child's play and good for left over bread. Any fruit could be used. Hang on, will find the recipe, I used to give this one out when I taught adult ed cookery!
................
Here it is!
Scandinavian Layered Apple Pudding.
4oz butter............I use a bit less in the interests of health
12 oz fresh white breadcrumbs... I use anything, seeds, crusts and all!
Grated rind of a lemon
1 tsp. cinnamon (hmm, I don't use much of this, more likely to be mixed spice here)
4oz brown sugar .... or to taste
2lb eating apples.. or whatever fruit
white sugar to sweeten apple
Juice of the lemon
Melt 4oz butter and fry 12 oz breadcrumbs. Sprinkle with grated rind of a lemon and 1 tsp. cinnamon. Cook for a further 5 minutes and stir in 4oz brown sugar.
Peel, core & slice 2lb eating apples. Simmer gently with the juice of the lemon until tender but not completely pureed. Sweeten to taste.
Layer the breadcrumbs with the apple in a serving dish - the sort of dish you’d make trifle in."Knowledge is knowing that a tomato is a fruit. Wisdom is not putting it in a fruit salad"

Not exactly the idea of this thread, but in a little discount outlet yesterday:shhh: they had packs of butter dated 09.05.08 for 30p ea & block stork marg 5-4-£1 dated till sometime next week. Five packs of each are now stored in the freezer, & if [STRIKE]No3[/STRIKE] anyone says anything about the date, I've "forgotten" they were in the freezer OK? You'll back me up woen-cha?
