My son 11 has just broken his dad's ipod

  • So, with punctuation please, how did the accident occur?

I still think that not enough respect is paid by kids for expensive consumer gadgets. Taking an ipod out the house without a good case is still a little like leaving a £250 bike unchained in a busy street

Sounds more like negligence than an accident.

Would it be an accident to put £200 in notes in your pocket whilst cycling, only for them to fly out and be lost? No, it would be negligence to secure the money correctly.

No way am I going to be this lenient to my little boy. Kids need to learn that expensive gadgets are to be respected. I think parents also need to realise this and not 'lend them' stuff that is liable to be broken easily.

Crumbs people drop things all the time I know I do, i have dropped my phone not through negligence but as an accident, I have been shoved in the high street and someone knocked the phone out of my hand, to the floor it went, the back opened and the battery flew across the pavement, it was an accident, the person did not deliberately make it happen, then again I am sure I should not have had it in my hand?:D

I do agree but it was the Dads choice to lend it to him at the end of the day.

Sorry I have chronic Rheumatoid arthritis and find it difficult to type.

My son had a problem with his bike, his bike was at the back of his house in the shed, it had to come through the house to the front, my OH said he would fix the brake for him, in my son's hand was the ipod, when he went to give his dad the bike he had the ipod in his right hand and it fell to the floor.

Yes fully agree, I am not sure though that a single person thinks that the ipod is going to end up on the floor, so I will not lend it to him, son has had the ipod other times and nothing happened, my eldest constantly borrows my mobile as his got washed and I don't think no, just incase it falls to the floor, the boys use the comp and we don't think no, incase a drink gets spilt on it etc... it was just lent and the accident happened.

Explained many times but here goes...son using ipod on settee, hears his dad in front garage, thinks to himself I will go and get my bike, the brakes need tightening, goes to the back of the house with the ipod in his hand rather than leaving it on the settee and this would not have happened, he gets his bike, ipod in right hand, bike in left, walks it through to his dad, when he goes to pass the bike over, the ipod leaves his hand and goes onto the floor....

Apologies, it just hurt my eyes trying to read a previous sentence.

I guess your family learnt an expensive lesson then. I did that many years ago when a phone fell out my hand and broke. Since then, anything gadgity that goes outside is either well insured or in a good case. Since having a toddler, I also make sure the case it very durable! I think i'm still lucky to have nothing dropped in the toilet.

Look, accidents don't just happen. It's called carelessness. A bike can survive a fall, an ipod can't. Your son was careless carrying both. Your OH was careless to never put the ipod in a cases.

I'm mean, i know it. My little boy will be treated in a mean way if he breaks stuff carelessly. Worse if it's on purpose. However, if I lend him delicate things and they get broken; I think that'd be my fault

My son should have left the ipod on the settee, got his bike, took it to his dad, sorted that out and came back to the ipod on the settee, he never did that, that is how it ended up on the floor.

Jeez, I let my 4 year old grandson use my 28 month old Ipod touch, but also my 3 month old Ipad.

He is very careful with them both, but if they get broken? Ain't the end of the world, and through using them he has learnt so much. About planets, different types of music, he can watch films etc.

I would let him use anything I had if it makes his life fun
  • yes yes, i let my 2 year old use my ipad also, he loves it (so much, we do limit his use of it or he gets a bit obsessed).

BUT.. it lives in this case - http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B004SPVZKW/ref=asc_df_B004SPVZKW4037397

Bill - i'm glad you can easily replace a £450 tablet computer, I can't. I also want the iPad to look nice and new when I fancy trading it in for a newer model.
