accidents happen, it sure sounds like your son is genuinely sorry that fact that he would give up the money for the game is a noble gesture, and will very likely learn to be more careful in future and concentrate on one thing at a time in the future, and assess the risks.

apple do an out of warranty replacement service more info here
as for music that should still be on the computer that it was bought with, and any contacts (if not synced with a service like gmail) should be in the last backup on itunes, if he hasn't backed up in a while connect it to itunes as it may be just the screen that has broken so it may still sync and back up all the reacent changes, it's at least worth a shot.

also any music or apps bought on the iPod are tied to the apple ID used so can be redownloaded for free in itunes on the computer.

you'll all look back in the future and laugh one day

Cheap refurbished ipods here. Getting a cheap one for the kids from here soon as I save up.

I'd buy one of those ones and sell the broken one on eBay.

Never give anything valuable to kids to play with. :D

It is only an iPod though. Fixable and/or replaceable. Maintaining relationships is more important.

Songs should be synced with the PC so that shouldn't be a problem (not unless he uses a program like Sharepod to put them on anyway, which is an alternative to iTunes).

My one piece of advice technology wise: Always backup! :D

The £85 one is the 2009 version we had the 2010 16gb one which refurbished is not much less than a new one and to pay that much might as well get a new one IYKWIM:D

All hell has broken loose here, 11 year old son, dropped his dad's ipod on the kerb whilst cycling it won't switch on, is broken all down the back and his dad not impressed.

Son in his room, me saying no probs we shall take it to the ipod shop, see what they say, it is fine, everyone keep calm.

Son saving for game coming out in November, offered it to his dad, me say no it was an accident, not deliberate, dad saying I have lost years of my songs and contacts, dad hands in pockets and grunting, son in his room out of the way, for crying out loud it is only an ipod! I suppose if it had been mine and my songs then I would feel as bad as his dad but let's all keep calm and see what the damage is first!

First thought is that even though it was an accident your son should be offering to pay for any damage or a replacement and you should be accepting such an offer.

I can fully understand your husband's annoyance - such items are not cheap and if mine got broken I couldn't afford to pop out and replace it. I think you should be supporting your husband a little more on this.

ETA: As usual on this board I am in a minority of one! Still think that the lad should pay at least some of the repair costs.

Actually viktory I agree with you, and I also dont think that the correct response is a calm and measured 'oh don't worry son its just a material possession'.

I dont see how it has harmed the child to learn that you have to be careful with other peoples things otherwise they will break and the person you have borrowed them off will be upset. Also that expensive things cost a lot to fix. It can also be helpful to see someone lose their temper and then say sorry son I overreacted but it was just because I was upset.

We are all human aren't we, or are we supposed to be super-parents?

All the above was done but at the end of the day it is a material thing that can be replaced, he did not do it on purpose, it was an accident, he immediately offered to pay his pocket money's worth that he is saving up with from here to November when the game comes out, expensive to replace yes but it is what it is, he is upset about it as it is, he does not need to be hauled over the burning fire for it:D
