  • it occurred to me that we used to be able to use return bus tickets the next day and train tickets too when I was younger! Is this still an option.I always assumed that if you bought a day return you had to return the same day but reading the terms and contions on the rail website it seems to imply that you could travel if you do it before 2.30 the next day. What do you all think?
Below is ezcerpt from the t and c......................

When and where the ticket can be used

Off-Peak tickets may require you to travel at specific times of day, days of the week or on a specific route.

Website journey planners can tell you when your ticket can be used - simply enter your outward and return journey times to see the trains you can travel on.

The outward part of Off-Peak Return tickets are valid for travel on the date shown on your ticket. Break of journey for an overnight stay is allowed. Where a journey continues into the next day, travel must resume before 1200 and no further break of journey is allowed except to change trains.

The return part of Off-Peak Return tickets are valid for travel within one calendar month of the outward journey. Travel is allowed until 0230 on the day following the last day of validity. If you are still travelling at 0230 then you may stay on the train to complete that part of the journey but no further break of journey is allowed and all travel must be completed by 1200.

anybody can help me please ??
this would be my first experience with UK trains.... i need to get from London to Edinburgh on April 3rd, as early as possible... thetrainline gives me 90+ pounds if booked directly.. splitting at Birmingham gives me 50 pounds... for 2 people
is there any better option ?? also, i should be able to book it from overseas...

also, i would agree even to travel by Caledonian Sleeper on April 2nd.. ScotRail quotes 140 pounds for 2 beds..but when i try to book them, i always get an error.... i also read that there are some 2 po 89 deals.. but cant find it...

    thanks, any help is appreciated...

This is my first post, thought I'd make it here!

A few journeys I make and split, as I am a poor student:

Cardiff - Wolverhampton, split at Shrewsbury (where change is necessary anyway).
Can also be split at Bristol and again at Birmingham as local short train rides between Cardiff-Bristol and Bham-Wton will be cheap anyway, couple of quid.

Cardiff - Metheringham (just outside of Lincoln), split at Nottingham (change necessary anyway)

I find that the main trick seems to be to split somewhere fairly close to the end destination as you can often get cheaper tickets for the last shorter part.

Also, if anyone could help me find some good ticket splits from Cardiff to London for a daytrip that would be great, I may end up getting the coach as is dirt cheap, but prefer the train.

Not advice on splitting, but have you looked into flying? It will most likely be cheaper.

    The best way is to book well in advance and as a student hopefully you use a 16-25 railcard. If all the cheap direct Advance tickets have sold out then try splitting the journey at one of the following;
Bristol Temple Meads, Bath Spa, Westbury, Salisbury or Reading

    Swindon is usually best.

To be honest, Swindon is usually the only reliable place to split on that route. In fact, of the ones you mentioned the only one that is even possible for splitting is Reading: the train from Cardiff goes through Bristol Parkway, Swindon and Didcot, and nowhere near Salisbury or Bath. :p

Aye, but you get the Cardiff to Pompy train which is normal very cheap service to get, then a London train from Bath or Salisbury, Good saving from Bath not as good at Salisbury but some saving over an Off peak ticket from Cardiff to London.

Been trying to figure something out. As a Manchester resident my disabled persons' bus pass will take me on trains within Greater Manchester for free, but which stations are at the furthest edges of that? I'm travelling to Stafford sometime in the next week (not sure when yet) and while I know I can get a bus from Stoke-on-Trent to Stafford (and visit my grandmother on the way), I'm not sure where I'd need to get the train from to get to Stoke, though I've been trying to figure it out. Would it be Stockport? Thanks.
