That fare is just about as cheap as you'll get on that route - the 'normal' fare is twice that.

These days it's probably cheaper via London - Cross Country are rather mean with both the availability and pricing of advance tickets

I'm wanting to travel from Preston to London on Saturday 25th April.

I want to arrive in London before 12pm and be leaving London around 6pm.

I have a 16-25 rail card.

I've tried searching for good deals, but not had much luck.

Any advice?

Does £39.75 return sound OK? Doesn't sound too bad to me. You'll get this only on Virgin's own website, The return's at 1930. £46.50 returning at 1830 on any rail website

Thanks. I spotted that one actually, but was trying to find something a bit cheaper (being too stingey I guess!).

I found some advance singles for £8 a couple of weeks ago and I'm now kicking myself for not buying them.

Is there any ways to split the tickets or is £40ish going to be the cheapest I can get?

I think you need to be quite savy when planning to book train tickets at the best price.

About 7 weeks ago, i was looking to book tickets from Liverpool to London return beginning of May - results were coming out at £65.00 return or £25 for 2 singles. Anyway, I figured that If i checked every other day what the prices were (because sometimes they release the cheaper tickets 6 weeks prior to travelling date), then i might get my deal...

cut a long story short...

I bought my single ticket from Liverpool to London for £8 - travelling May 11th, and 4 weeks later bought my return single ticket from London to Liverpool again, for £8 coming back a week later. So that's £16 return for my ticket for what was originally £65...:j

Patience is a virtue and I would suggest that you keep on checking the prices every day at least 6 weeks before you travel. I must admit though, i consider myself to be quite lucky in finding bargains with airfares and train tickets, it's just about keeping your eye on the ball and frequently checking the website ....

Looking to travel from London to Middlesbrough on Fri 3 Apr about 3pm and returning sat 4 April about 4pm - any suggestions please anyone as not done this before and need to get up north urgently to see sick relative.

Consider splitting at York, Darlington, Doncaster or Leeds.

Thanks Richardw - tried these but can't seem to get the fares for less than about £200 for 2 of us - we watned to pay less than this - may have to consider driving but wanted to avoid the rush hour traffic on friday coming our of london.

Whats the cheapest return from Peterborough to Oldham this saturday? Is groupsave available on any of these routes?
