    HI
Can anyone help me find the cheapest ticket from Nottingham to London, travelling on a Thursday.

I need to be in London around 9AM, returning on the same day after 2pm but not too late.

    Thanks

    Right getting back from London is no problem;
London St P to Nottingham 14:15 £20 Advance Single

However, you want to get to London during the rush hour and that gonna cost you the cheapest I could get for you is £45ish by splitting Anytime tickets at Grantham,Peterborough and Stevenage.

Hopefully either dzug1, omelette451 or alanrowell might know of a route that I've missed and be able to help more

By wanting to arrive in London around 9am you have chosen the most expensive time of the day to travel where the cheapest return ticket will be £131 and the cheapest single is £65.50
You can cut this down considerably by getting the £65 single for the outward journey and getting an advance Purchase Single for the return journey, but if its for Thursday next week you will need to book quickly.
Currently the following are available after 2pm on the following departures from St Pancras.
    2.15pm (£13), 2.30pm (£20), 3.15 pm (£24) but after that there's nothing cheap until about 8pm.

If you don't mind an early start and going from Nottingham to KingsCross changing at Grantham there is still a £47.50 Advance Purchase single available on the 5.50 am from Nottingham arriving in Kings Cross at 7.53 am

sorry to quote myself here:o first was to put out feelers without anything concerete have dates of 08/05/09 fri return sun 10/05/09 same times £8 tickets seem unavailable and looks dearer looking at london midland as posted and no difference than virgin /trainline at just under £300 (6 adults) raileasy are only offering upgraded tickes only. Help wanted please
also is it worth getting a railcard or any promo codes that can help
    thanks:T

Well you obviously didn't look hard enough ;)

There are plenty of £8 or £12 tickets outward on the 8th, depending on the time you choose. (If you try booking for 6 adults at once it goes up to £15pp so there is obviously only a small number available at the lowest prices - you can get round this by booking it in two transactions and paying £12 for some and £15 for the rest).

For the cheapest tickets you have to flexible, and your return journey proves it. Sunday afternoon between 2 and 4 is one of the most popular times of the week to travel, so your fares are bound to be higher if you want to travel then. If you can leave EUS at 12.35 or 18.35 you can get tickets on VT express services for £12pp; between them it's more expensive. This is one of the main reasons I always suggest using the nxec site for researching and booking tickets - it allows you to scroll through all trains on a particular day so you can get the best price. If you insist on using the VT/trainline sites you're deliberately making things more difficult for yourself.

Finally, there is a cheaper option on London Midland services. You have to tell the booking engine you're willing to travel on slower services to get the best fares; if you do that you get offered £22pp 'super off peak return' tickets, exactly as I said in reply to your first post. These tickets are walk-on fares and are always available in unlimited numbers.

There are no railcards available for 6 adults. Martin's latest email has a way to get £4 off the total but other than that I don't think there's any discount you could use. (Unless you find another four people, in which case Virgin will give you a group fare discount...)
  • It will depend a lot on how far in advance you can book / where in London you need to be at 9am and how late is late for returning home - a quick look for next week is around £80 ish but I reckon another couple of searches would reduce that.... if you can give dates etc then it may be a bit more accurate.

Did you even bother to look yourself?

Type your details into a booking system and what's the first thing that appears?
Newcastle to Meadowhall, one change, d11.30am £18.50 adv sgl

Save a pound by splitting at York.

    :)

Hi I need to be in South London by 9.30 Am, so reaching to Londo for 9 should be ok.
I dont want to be back in Nottingham later than 6pmm really.

I am travelling Thursday 12th March returning the same day.

    Thanks! :rotfl:

But you didn't say you wanted a return ticket! Anyway, a bit of imagination is all it takes...

The best way is to plan your route via Doncaster: there are plenty of tickets available for Friday NCL-DON for £16.50 e/w. Then buy a cheap day return DON-MHS for £4.50.

There are also a couple of options changing/splitting at York, but you have to leave SHF after 8.30pm to get them. There's also a slightly earlier one changing at Leeds. (These aren't available to MHS so make sure you put SHF as the final destination).

Failing that, the ordinary (and flexible) off-peak return fare NCL-MHS is about £55, so there's no need to pay more than this. You're lucky there's anything cheap at all: Friday afternoon on trunk routes out of London and Birmingham booked just two days in advance is possibly the worst way to travel!
