Has anyone got a way to get cheaper tickets for leaving London in the evening peak? St Pancras - Market Harborough is £48 anytime single - could there be a through ticket from the other side of London that might include that in an offpeak fare?
I don't know what time you normally travel and if you always travel at the same time, then you can save by splitting tickets. However, if you frequently travel at different times then the trains tend to stop at different places on the way, so this may prove inconvenient.
For example:
Split at Luton Airport Parkway: £11.50 Anytime Day Single + £18.30 Anytime Day Single = £29.80
Split at Luton: £11.90 Off Peak Day Single + £18.30 Anytime Day Single = £30.20
Split at Bedford: £17.90 Off Peak Day Single + £14.10 Off Peak Day Single = £32
Some peak trains also have advance fares of £30 single which is similar, so if you book in advance and it is on the train(s) you travel on, then you may wish to consider this.
Hope this may be of use.0 -

For the outward journey there is currently £8 advance single on most trains that day (including the 10.48 and 11.48 VT services). The return is more problematic because it's a Sunday and advance tickets aren't released this far in advance for weekend journeys. You could book the outward portion now (it won't go down in price but may go up) and the return bit later, but obviously you have to consider that there is a small risk that you won't get a cheap fare coming back.
If you want surety now the best option is to get a London Midland 'super off-peak' return ticket for £22 which is an open ticket valid on any off-peak service (which for you would be 10.04 from LIV on the 15th and 13.50/14.50 from EUS on the 17th. This is slower than the VT route though, and if it were me I'd probably take the other option, given that there is still ages before you go.0 -

Try looking at where the train stops. Most direct trains will stop at Edinburgh, Newcastle, York & Peterborough
On the NXEC website, fill in your details then when you get a list of trains click on the little information icon which will give you a little window with the start and end points along with travel times and ticket information. There's also a box that says "show all calling points". Click on that to get the details of where and when it stops.
Then start breaking the trip down into separate sections and finding the cost per section0 -
The cheapest walk on return fare is £48.90, so presumably what you have got is 'cheap' singles each way. If so you are unlikely to better it by split ticketing - but Sheffield and Derby are worth a shot just in case.
The other possibility is via Manchester - as it's (mainly) not Cross Country trains cheapies may be easier to come by.
I was going to post the same. I have already travelled the opposite from Leeds to Birmingham with split tickets last year.
The fare depends on when you are travelling and for how long, the biggest savings can be made on day returns. Derby and Sheffield are the best places for the splits because all trains on this route stop at these stations.
CrossCountry seem to have axed all advanced fares on their peak time trains. This means that there is only one peak time fare return between Leeds and Birmingham, £84.00. I had managed to cut this down to just £32.70 with spilts at Sheffield and Derby fro a day return. An all off-peak split return is £28.70.0 -
Hi, was wondering if anyone could help me find a cheap train fare?
I need to travel from Birmingham New Street to Hull on the 10th April, returning on the 17th April.
(Preferably starting each of the journeys after 12pm)
I can't find anything less than £41 (This is for a return, singles are £35, EACH! which is stupid, because I've had singles for £11 before), which quite frankly, I resent paying!
I've tried looking for New Street-Leeds. Leeds-Hull
New Street, Manchester. Manchester, Hull
New Street, Sheffield. Sheffield, Hull.
But with no luck.
Any help appreciated!
