  • Hi folks,

I thought I'd add my two-penneth to this one:

For travel on Christmas Eve from Birmingham to Norwich (single), I was quoted £47 standard class.

By split ticketing in London and buying in advance I managed to get a Birmingham to London Marylebone single for a fiver and a London Liverpool St to Norwich for £16 standard class or £22 first class. I went for the upgrade and still saved myself £20....

    Happy Christmas Money Savers.....

Hi just wondering if anyone can help/advise me. I want to travel cheaply from Manchester to London Euston on 10th Jan about 9am and return on 11th Jan about 4pm. Being new to train travel I have been struggling to find cheap fares and would welcome any advice.

    Thanks

  • Hi try this:
Manchester Pic to Crewe Anytime Return £13.80
Crewe to London Euston Off Peak Return £20 (London Midland)

London Euston to Crewe Off Peak Return £0 (London Midland)
Crewe to Manchester Pic Anytime Return £0

    Total £33.80

However, the reason the Crewe to London service is so cheap is that it is a slower service and takes 3 hours. To get these services to show up on the national rail website you need to 'other options' below 'number of passengers' and select search by cheapest.

Thanks for the reply. It is probably me just being really dumb but I can not find the Crewe to London service.

Sent you a PM with a detailed 'how to' but use http://ojp.nationalrail.co.uk/en/pj/jpfor for your journey search and then advance search option and select 'London Midland' as the Operator.

Thanx to Omlette451 for showing me this new cheap route to London

    Hi all,
My daughter lives in Dawlish (not Dawlish Warren) and has to travel most days to Plymouth, trip takes about 1 hour but she can't use her student card as she needs to travel before the cheap rate kicks in.(about 8am) She pays £9 return, can anyone help with this?
    Thanks in advance
The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot. If you deal with the lowest bidder, it is well to add something for the risk you run, and if you do that you will have enough to pay for something better.

Well a monthly season is £192 odd - which sounds as though it isn't quite worth while

£9 return sounds remarkably cheap - I make it £11 odd. How is she getting it for that price?

Yes I made it £11+ as well. I just phoned her and she says that it is £11, says I need to wash my ears out! Good job she lives so far away, kids are never too old to receive a slap IMHO

The season then looks possibly attractive depending on the number of journeys a month.

Might just be worth looking at split ticketing at Totnes, assuming the trains stop there. It works with some longer distance journeys but maybe not locally like this. It's too near bedtime for me to summon the energy to look it up.
  • Does anyone know the cheapest train route using split tickets on the 10th January 2009?
