For a cheap day return, get a return to Peterborough (£7) and a return to Ipswich (£17.50). Total cost £24.50, this saves at least £30, and you can travel via Norwich or Cambridge, as long as you don't go via London.

I'll add to this by pointing out that many journey options from Bristol, South Wales or Gloucester/Cheltenham to Exeter, Plymouth and beyond benefit from splitting at Bristol and/or Taunton and/or Exeter and/or Plymouth. Just remember that your train(s) must call at the station(s) where you have split your tickets. Many potential journeys between these stations yield split ticket savings for walk-on flexible fares (Anytime, Off-Peak, Off Peak Day). Of course there may well be greater savings with Advance fares, but you lose the flexibilty.0 -
derby-brum 9.05 off peak brum-swindon 21.4 off peak total 30.45

Just found that out after making the journey regularly to see my girlfriend. Gives me enough money for a pint after the 2.5-4.5hr journey. Not tried it yet, fingers crossed it works.0 -

There's one tiny little problem with London to Newcastle on the 28th - there aren't any trains before 9:00am so you can't get to Newcastle, let alone St James' Park before midday0

Ipswich to Blair Atholl or Perth
Looking for the best ticket splitting for the above route out on 20th Dec (early) and back on the 23rd Dec.
Thanks in advance0 -
I looked at this trip to travel in 2 weeks time. I had missed out on the obvious advanced saver tickets and was presented with the prospect of paying £44.90 for the standard return journey. However, following MSE advice to split the journey, I booked a ticket from Thatcham to Oxford (return = £9.50), Oxford to Banbury (£5.00 return) and Banbury to Coventry (£10.10). In total, a saving of £20.30 or, 45%. And this is travelling in 16 days! However, there may be the minor inconvenience of having to move seats during this trip but I am prepared to do this to save the dosh. Why are the train companies allowed to get away with such loopholes in their ticketing policy?0

. Why are the train companies allowed to get away with such loopholes in their ticketing policy?
Many of these loopholes are because the different legs of the journey are set by different train companies. They are really under no obligation to collude with each other to set fares - indeed they are probably under an obligation not to.0
