    Hi

I am having trouble splitting Leeds - Exeter rtn on 14th Jan (been invited for interview before my move down there:j ). I can find the offpeak return for £113.80 but even splitting I cannot get this down any further (can only get it to go up in price:eek: ). I need to arrive by 12ish and will be there for the whole afternoon doing tests and things so don't anticipate being able to leave before 6ish.

Any help would be gratefully received

    Try This;
Leeds to Manchester Pic 04:52 Advance Single £5
Manchester Pic to Newport(Souh Wales) 06:30 Advance Single £17
Newport(South Wales) to Exeter St Davids 10:15 Advance Single £16:50 arrives Exeter at 12:30

Exeter St Davids to Leeds 18:23 Advance Single £25.50

    Total £64

Advance Tickets so book early and you must travel on the booked trains, there is an earlier train from Newport to Exeter but you only have around 10 mins to catch it at Newport but the choice is yours

Cross Country seemed to have 'abolished' the cheaper advance fares and offer in the main only the most expensive band only slightly cheaper than the walk on fare.

Splitting at Birmingham and Cheltenham might help but I'll leave you to try it.

Thanks for your help dzug1,i thought the prices had gone up,heres the best split:

Cardiff to Birmingham Advance single £11
Birmingham to Nottingham Advance single £7

    Total cost for return £36

    Saving £16
  • Carmarthen to Truro and back

Having to do this route twice a month as it's my commute to work, as an Undertaker!

    Split into four parts as follows;
    Carmarthen - Swansea
    Swansea - Bristol Parkway
    Bristol Parkway - Plymouth
    Plymouth - Truro
    and reverse for return

Have achieved savings of £13.00 to £35.00 on a one way basis.

There may be other ways to carve up the journey but not sure if the investment of time is worth it,

    Happy travelling

Many of these loopholes are because the different legs of the journey are set by different train companies. They are really under no obligation to collude with each other to set fares - indeed they are probably under an obligation not to.

Split ticketing 'loopholes' were around long before the privatisation and fragmentation of the rail network. The rise of the internet and sites such as this have just bought the 'loopholes' to the attention of more people. I remember travelling to Plymouth from Taunton for a day out in the late 80's and discovering my fare was cheaper if I split it at Exeter, this is still the case today.
The privatised railway inherited an already complex ticketing system and made it more complex with the addition of TOC specific advance fares.
There is no collusion on fares, every point to point journey has a fare set by one TOC (usually the one for which the greatest part of the journey is undertaken). Most Off-peak (formerly SAVER) fares are regulated by the Govt and increases are pegged to a certain % linked to inflation, however TOCs have realised that the restrictions on when Off-peak fares apply are NOT regulated, so they have, in recent times, started to introduce longer PEAK periods when cheaper fares are not valid. A bit sneaky but the TOCs say this is done to try to get more people onto quieter trains and to tempt people to buy advance tickets.
However you can sometimes use split-ticketing to get round this. If you have to start your journey in the PEAK(Anytime) period but it ends in the OFF-PEAK period only purchase a PEAK (Anytime) ticket for the portion of your journey that is in the PEAK period, picking a suitable splitting point and then purchasing an OFF-PEAK ticket for the remainder of your journey. But remember you have to pick a split-ticketing point at which the train you are travelling on calls or where you have to change trains anyway. • Having recently moved jobs from farringdon to elstree I found out that it is cheaper to buy:

Single St. Albans to Elstree - £4.20
Single Elstree to London Thamesllink* £5.00

    than

Single St. Albans to London Thamelink* £9.30

Only 10p saving but it's better than nothing! :)

    * London Thameslink includes Kings Cross, Farringdon, City Thameslink, Blackfriars and London Bridge

I always thought that fares on the same company and line would not be able to benefit from split fares but this is the First Capital Connect direct line into London

Try Split Advance Tickets at Manchester Piccadilly, you can get the journey down to £30.50 each but you do have to leave a bit earlier on the 25th

Split Advance tickets so get them early and you have to travel on the booked train and change trains at Manchester, also give yourself plenty of time to make your connections at Manchester.

  • Hi all, can anyone offer any advice on getting a ticket from Bournemouth - London St Pancras down from £48 return? We are travelling on a Sunday early (7 a.m.) as we need to get to St Pancras for the Eurostar leaving at 11 a.m., so can't use Megatrain Bmth to Waterloo as this is only available after 12 noon. Have tried a couple of variations of split tickets e.g Bmth - Southampton but this was even more expensive. £48 seems very steep as it would be nearly £100 for the two of us! We would like to be green and use the train but at this price we are thinking of driving up, paying for parking and continuing journey by tube.
