I can find you a £7 single to come home on the Monday but nothing on the Saturday.

Best advice is to buy the £7 now and wait for the cheap singles to come out for the Saturday. As it's a weekend they are usually later. There's a slight risk that there may be nothing suitable.

Less risky is to wait for those cheap singles and buy both together. Risks the Monday being sold out though

Worst case is buy that £35 ticket on the day - it's the walk on fare.

Split ticketing at Sheffield can help if there are no cheap through fares

It was actually on Chiltern's web site - but any rail web site should show it.

You may need to specifically search for the single journey
  • Hi everyone,

I am going from Kings Cross to Newcastle on the 5th December.

I want to arrive around 4.30pm and think I have found the best split at Retford.

I am getting a little confused with it all so any help would be appreciated.

I need to return on the 7th Dec after 12pm.

    Thanks
  • Aye, Retford's not a bad place to split, have you tried Doncaster or York as these are two good East coast splits and might be slightly cheaper.

    Or if your not to fussy about which London station your traveling to then try this;

    London St Pancras to Sheffield
    Sheffield to Newcastle

Normal split on this route is Peterborough - you an get the 19:13 from there to Newcastle for £20.45

If you don't mind getting to Newcastle a bit later then the 21:27 from Retford has a FIRST Class fare of £19.

I hope you are booking with NXEC as they give a 10% discount on their trains
  • Can anyone help me with getting from Plymouth to London? I want to go up on 13th Feb and back on the 15th so am booking early but its still coming up quite expensive!! And am unsure where to split?

The train websites are showing that you can book up to the 13th February, so any ticket for the 15th is going to be expensive as they will be the "full cost travel any time, any train and get a full refund if you decide not to travel" tickets

Tickets for the 13th might be bookable as singles but it doesn't mean that the cheap tickets are available yet - and given it's a Friday AND Valentines weekend you may find that they are few and far apart.

Keep trying the advance tickets on a daily basis, the train companies release tickets in blocks. As a rule of thumb, they are usually available approx 12 weeks ahead.

Just been on the website myself, looks like advance fares are upto 11th feb.

Cheapest advance on this line is £13 each way. not sure if it is worth split tickets when this is available. Hope this helps.
