Could anyone help me in possible split ticketing from Oxford to Manchester? I will be travelling mostly on weekends, and cheaper advance fares (14 pounds single) are very limited compared to weekdays. Off-peak return is 61 pounds, while 2 advance singles there and back is 43 pounds minimum altogether. Anyway I could beat these?

Just looked myself and it looks like the £14 single tickets are actually widely available. Looking at December 20/21 as an example, all but 2 of the trains have £14 singles available. Do you know what dates you're after?
  • Liverpool Lime street to Newcastle off-peak return £66.10

Liverpool Lime Street to Manchester Picadilly off-peak return £11.50
Manchester Picadilly to York off peak return £21.50
York to Newcastle off-peak return £31.80

    Split fare £64.80, saving £1.30

i'm sure this can come down more with cheap mainline fares between Newcastle and York. Can anyone do better?

Well maybe. Cheap advance purchase singles might well turn out cheaper if available for at least some of the route. Your combination has the advantage of flexibility.

    I couldn't beat your £1.30 saving for an Off peak Return ticket, tried the advance ticket option and advance tickets from LiverpoolLS to Newcastle are like gold dust even 10 weeks in advance. However, by splitting advance tickets you can save a bundle;

    Liverpool LS to Leeds £8
    Leeds to Newcastle £11

Times 2 for your return gives a total: £38

But you do lose your flexibility of traveling on any off peak train as with Advance Tickets you must travel on the train you have booked and if you do split advance tickets always give yourself a bit of extra time to change trains at the station you split, just incase the train is late.

Birmingham and/or Wolverhampton are the first places I would try, plus possibly Banbury.

    Hi

Anyone suggest splits or the cheapest tickets from Market Harborough - Inverness return (2 adults + 2 children - Family Railcard).

Cheapest I have found is Off-Peak return with Railcard £208.40 for the 4 of us.

Don't mind travelling via London if that is cheapest.

Travelling Outbound late Friday night or Saturday morning in Feb 2009 return following Friday or Saturday in Feb 2009.

Slightly concerned with Saturday travel, as might encounter rail engineering works.

Have tried First Scot's bargain births, but dates not released yet and Friday nights doesn't appear as much availability.

Have looked at flights, but by time factored in parking, luggage costs, seat costs, etc, they are approx £400.

    Thanks for any suggestions.

None of the rail companies have released cheap singles beyond the first few days in February yet so you might as well wait for that to happen for the days you want to travel. Weekdays shouldn't be too long but weekends can be a lot later being released.

The off peak return is a walk on fare so you could buy it on the day if nothing better turns up.

From looking at nearer dates I suspect you are going to have to do split tickets to get advance fares anyway. London is the obvious choice if you travel that way, otherwise York and maybe Edinburgh as well.
  • I need to go 29th Jan 2009 and come back on 1st Feb. All I can find is a cheap return about £60 - where I can split my journey to get a better deal? thanks

Your just a bit to early for the advance tickets, the trainline website says these cheap advance tickets are available, but not all routes and connections are releases at the same time keep checking over the next few days and they should released their advance tickets and you will be able to get cheap Advance tickets from £16 per person one way
