Yes, this is normally checked and enforced. I was on a train yesterday where the guard pulled a group of six people up for doing exactly this and charged them the additional fare.
I had the same last month, young couple got pulled for being on the wrong time train, (should have been on a later one) Cross Country and the guard charged them full standard fare worked out about £92:eek: for both of them, so I wouldn't recomend it.:D:D:D:D
Where's the Coffee?? Show me the Coffee NOW!!0 -
first post :j I don't think this one has been covered
Got quoted £190 for 2 adults going on one day coming back the next from darlington to kings cross(midweek)
Did the split at peterborough and got 4 single tickets and 2 returns for £138:D It was limited to specific journeys but it still ended up the same trains, we might have to move from one set of seats to another but for £52 I can do that.0 -

£95 per person is the walk up fare that is available on all trains, so either you are travelling within the next few days or sometime after September which is what NXEC is currently booking up till0 -
Hello everyone.
I regularly travel from Manchester to London to visit my boyfriend who lives in Ealing.
When I looked into splitting tickets it all worked out fine until I tried the Crewe to Milton Keynes leg of the journey - this was showing a rather expensive cost of at least £42.
Obviously if I were to split tickets the whole way and do this on a single fare basis both ways, it would end up costing me more than the standard £62 or so Virgin return fare.
Anyone got any ideas how to batter the fare down?? Messing around with various rail provider's websites for hours on end has really stressed me out!
Thanks
P.S. I have to travel Fridays after 6pm and return Sundays after 8pm.0 -
Travelling between London and Manchester? Skip the queues. Print your ticket at home or send it to your mobile.
It's on the home page of the Virgin website - but you are trying to travel at peak time for people visiting London.0 -

Sunday fares on this route tend not to be released until about a week before the journey - if there are any at all.
I'd warn against splitting tickets on this route on Sundays - the services are already disrupted by engineering work and if that goes wrong you can get stuck in the wrong place with the wrong ticket
One trick is to travel to/from St Pancras via Sheffield - whether that's possible at the times you want to go I don't know but there are often good advance fares that way.0 -
hi i was wondering if someone would be able to help me find cheap split train tickets for leeds to london, been trying to do it myself but dont seemm to be getting very far
i looking at traveling on 5th of sept and returning either on the sunday or monday
thank you for the help in advance0 -
Travelling on a Friday generally means you'll pay more.
But you can get Leeds to London for £21 on the 8:28am and can return on the Monday returning on the 12:35 or 20:30 on the Monday for £11.25.
If you book through the NXEC website expect a 10% discount on those prices
Failing that you could play around with doing a split at Peterborough0 -
As a new member, but a seasoned split ticketer, I would like to pass on a few hints and tips re splitting.
1. Wherever you are travelling more often than not it pays to work the split station by station from your start point until you suddenly find that you jump from the cheapest fare to a dearer one. This seems to work because when setting fares rail franchises tend to use a "box" system (i.e. several stations are grouped together and the same fare applied from one group to another).
An example of this is as follows:-
Going from say Peterborough to Sheffield (via Retford) the cheap day return from Peterborough operates all the way to Shireoaks (about 15 miles from Sheffield) but then to the station after Shireoaks the fare more than doubles. So you simply pick up the cheap day to Shireoaks and your fare from there to Sheffield will be another cheap day. As a matter of interest the off-peak saving on this journey is approx. £28.
2. If you start your journey during peak time, then to find the best split you need to find which station is the first you reach after the end of the peak time restriction and split there. This will almost always be your cheapest split.
As an example:-
Leaving from station A during peak, passing through station B, still during peak, but reaching station C after the end of peak restriction and continuing to your destination, the cheapest split will be at station C. You will probably be paying saver return for the first part of your journey and cheap day return thereafter.
If you start your journey off-peak and finish in peak, then simply reverse the split.
3. Always worth checking the many and varied 'Rover' tickets. These can include both your start and destination and yet be cheaper than any split. Only snag is they are usually off-peak only.
4. If you happen to live between two stations and one is a city or large town station, then consider (providing you have the appropriate transport) starting your journey from the smaller station. Quite often the fares from here will be cheaper and of course you can still split.
Happy splitting!0 -
