if you want to travel sooner than that then look at where the train stops. In the case of the direct train - if you go to the National Rail website, put in your details then you have the option to look at the details of specific trips then you can look at the "Calling Points" which for the direct journey are typically
Newport (South Wales)
Gloucester
Cheltenham Spa
Birmingham New Street
Tamworth
Burton-on-Trent
So you can try any of the above as a splitting point and if you do it right you won't even have to get off the train0 -
The fare from Nottingham to Lancaster, with a change at Manchester, was £38.50. The time between trains was just 8 minutes! However, I booked Nottingham to Manchester for £17 and Manchester to Lancaster for £5 - a total of £22 and thus a saving of £16.50. I also now have an hour at Manchester. Note that there are several stations in Manchester, and I found just one train for Lancaster that went out of the Oxford Road station (where the Nottingham train arrives).0

Am travelling to Rhyl from London this Friday, returning Sunday. Any suggestions about splitting on this route? Also return journey looks a nightmare! Any ideas of how I can make this shorter as well as cheaper???
Many thanks!0 -
Hi people. I am looking for two tickets from Middlesbrough to Horley on the 3rd of September, but I have tried splitting the tickets to York, Leeds, Manchester and in London center. I have no clue where else to try and split the tickets and the cheapest ones I've found was £62
It's one with a 16-25 railcard and one standard.
Can anyone please help? I have been looking for days now. Thanks in advance.0 -

Not a great saving but if you book direct on the national express east coast site you will get 10% off bringing it down to £55:45, on the 11:24 service. Easier to type in GNER.com and it re-directs you.0 -
Great thread, looks like some people have saved quite a few £££'s.
So far I've been insuccessful if finding a `deal` for myself though, the best I've found is about £80 return.
Aberdeen - London Monday 22nd Sept arriving in the afternoon
London - Aberdeen Tues 23rd Sept departing around 1-2pm
Any pointers to the best deal?0 -

I think you've probably got it - the normal fare's a lot more than that.
Booking earlier may have gotten you a cheaper fare0 -
My first post so please be patient with me. Just starting out trying to get bargain tickets for train journeys, but so far no luck! My boyfriend is moving to the Sevenoaks area of Kent soon (his first full time job) and I am sadly having to stay behind in Staffordshire til I finish uni in the summer of 2009. Trying to find some split tickets with savings but to no avail. I am willing to change trains, split tickets, etc etc just to get a cheaper ticket. Anyone have any ideas?0

For this sort of journey you will be better off getting advance purchase tickets for the through journey - that way you will save on the underground fare (which will be included) and having to pay full fare on the London -Sevenoaks section where there aren't really any cheap fares.
An additional snag at the moment is that there is engineering work somewhere between Stafford and London every weekend at the moment - this means that cheap tickets for Saturday/Sunday can be released late if at all.
A YP railcard would be worth investing in - I assume from your mention of uni that you would be eligible for one.
For split journeys try Birmingham, transferring there to Chiltern to Marylebone - it will be a longer journey. Up to you if the saving's worth it.0 -
Hi guys,
On Saturday I'm going to London - it'll be one adult and two kids with a family rail card. We went last Friday and paid about £30 for the tickets, but the cheapest way I can see of doing it this time is buying two singles rather than a saver return which will cost £43.65 (via thetrainline.com). Before I purchase, I was wondering if anyone knew of an effective way to split when travelling from Derby to London that might make it a bit cheaper? I've written down the prices to every station from every other station en-route but thought I might ask in case someone already has experience of this before I try to work it out.
We're aiming to leave Derby at about 10am and catch a return train at 6-ish.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!0
