Hiya, I've just joined the site as I've recently moved near exeter but my 20 year old son didn't want to come and I miss him a lot. He wants to come and visit next Friday (5th Sept) til Sunday but I don't understand all this split ticket business.Could anyone help, I would be really grateful for some help, thanks

Not sure where this post has been - haven't seen it before. so the reply is a bit late but may help in future

The first thing I would look at on this journey is advance singles for the complete journey - or at least to St Davids. They start at £10

If that fails then see if a split at Bristol TM shows up any more advance singles.

    If all else fails:

Saver return Birmingham to Cheltenham £18.30
Cheap day singles Cheltenham to Bristol (or a saver return - but it costs a little more) £6.90 each way
Saver return Bristol to Exeter £21
  • Any Suggestions For Hove/brighton - To Leeds?
  • I did this the other day - was going to Stratford-on-Avon from Preston and then on to London, and did this:

Preston to Birmingham New Street return: £26.25
Birmingham Moor Street to Stratford-upon-Avon return: £6.95
Birmingham New Street to London Euston return: £26.05 (could also have gone Moor Street to Marylebone as the tickets don't specify London or Birmingham stations)

    Total cost: £59.25

London Euston to Preston single: £43.15
    Preston to Stratford single: £24.10
    Stratford to London single: £11.15

    Total cost: £78.40
    Saving: £19.15

And all walk-up tickets with YP railcard! Admittedly £19 isn't a massive saving, but money's money. Now all I need to do is try and split Preston to Bournemouth...

  • Hi guys, new here, trying to fathom this split ticketing i've heard so much about.

Going on holiday to Penzance in a couple of weeks from Horsham - out monday, back friday.

So far with Young Persons railcard and single fairs I've got £29.35 out, and £25.10 return. Is this the best i'm gonna get do you think? Else where should i split to try and take advantage?

Assuming those are advance purchase single fares then you are very unlikely to do better by splitting.
  • Thanks dzug1, we fetched my son in the car in the end, NOT recommended lol, but your advice may well come in handy in the future as there are other members of the family who want to visit too. :A Donna
  • Hi
Does anyone know a cheap way using splitting to get to Birmingham International from Chesterfield? I need to get 2 tickets (1 adult, 1 16-25 railcard) for the 06.57 train on Wed 10th December. Thought I'd be able to get it cheap by loking so early but no such luck. Thanks

Try splitting at Derby, and Birmingham New St, do discounts on the railcard apply at that time?

  • I managed to book a successful split today, bettering a promotion rate!

I’m booked on a course held at a hotel at Manchester Airport for 4 consecutive Wednesdays.

The initial search found the following discounted fare:

Northallerton to Manchester Airport – Airgetaway promotion Return ticket : £36

But by splitting at York I found :

Northallerton to York (Return) – Off Peak Return ticket : £8.60
York to Manchester Airport - Airgetaway promotion Return ticket : £22

    New Total : £30.60 saving a decent £5.40 (15%)
