Hi all - has anyone had any luck with the Manchester-Cardiff route? Due to late plans coming up I'm looking for the tickets at the moment rather than my usual advance planning, the cheapest is £29 for a single - I've tried splits at all stations along the route, or Birmingham or Bristol, with nothing cheaper.

Any other ideas for this route? Coach is slower and more expensive, and the air link seems to have ended a few months ago!:(

Well Hotrod, you haven't been very precise about when you are travelling. I have assumed you are going tomorrow, and the best single price (leaving at anytime) is £48.30 for a Standard Day Single.
If you want to travel on Tuesday or later the price drops to £23.00 for a Arriva Trains Wales Leisure Advance C single ticket.
I can see your £29.00 ticket, but if you can travel later in the day it drops to £23.00.

Hi Keith, 15th Feb (coming Friday) around 2.30pm as per the post title. It still seems to be £29, was asking to see if there were any other suggestions for splitting this route, or any alternatives to rail or coach?

Oops.. Sorry should've noticed date and time.
Yes you are right. On that date until about 7pm the best price is £29. Fridays are very popular.
But if you can travel later in the day, it can be done for £16 leaving at 19.34, or even as low as £10 leaving at 20:34 or 21:34.
I've not tried any splitting... you seem to have covered that already.
  • Birmingham to Brighton (with a young person railcard) is £37.45 but if you split it into London:
Birmingham Moor Street - London Marylebone (you can normally add the underground onto this ticket for a small amount also)
    £11.90
then London Bridge to Brighton = £16.50

    a saving of £10 ish!:T

Any ticket from Birmingham - London from Moor street is cheaper as they have a special offer on chiltern railways. As long as you dont mind a slightly slower less luxurious train! much cheaper then birmingham new street - london euston!

Good post - but I can do it cheaper. £25.90 saver return all the way with YP railcard - Virgin to Watford Junction then via Willesden Jun/Kensington Olympia/Clapham Jn to Brighton. Changing points depend on time of day.

    hi, hoping someone can help.

i want to go from preston to london on 17 april, getting to london for 10am at the latest and returning anytime after 5pm.

i have tried direct, splitting via manchester or crewe or wolverhampton or rugby as recommended on the thread but can't get anything. there are supposed to be saver ones for a tenner each way but not are available.

its probably because i have to get in early that makes it difficult but if anyone knows of any splits from preston to london please let me know. even it if doesn't work on this day i'd like to be able to go more often

    many thanks

Advance singles are your answer - not savers. Currently £47.50 out and £16.50 back on your date. I doubt if splitting will help but it might be worth trying Milton Keynes - IF trains from Preston stop there - no idea.

I need to get to Milton Keynes from Stoke next sunday and was looking on the trainline.com. They quoted £39 as the cheapest ticket, that was stoke to stafford on a local puddle jumper and then virgin from stafford to milton keynes.

I thought this sounded expensive so looked at spliiting the route. Booking a single from stoke to stafford is £3.90 and then i can get a value advance from stafford to milton keynes for £10.

So all in £13.90 - hurrah for split tickets!

    Hi folks,

Want to get a train from Stirling to Birmingham on 30/05/08 returning 01/06/08.

I'll be changing at Edinburgh or Glasgow, any splits I should consider to reduce the cost. Or any other tips?

Currently about £196 for 2 people return, which seems very high, flights EDI to Birmingham are £100.
