this is driving me mad.
i don't normally travel by trains but am looking to. unfortunately can't book in advance as need to travel on monday. Reading to bristol temple mead on monday at peak hours.
Doesn't anyone know the cheapest way of doing this? Please?0 -
You CAN book in advance - up to 1800 tomorrow if the tickets are still available. Pick up at the fast ticket machine at Reading station
Without splitting and assuming Temple Meads:
£48.50 standard single out and an advance purchase single back - cheapest available £19 at the moment.
Splitting (trains must call at Didcot):
Standard day return to Didcot - £7.40
Standard day return on - £40.20.
Cheap advance singles can reduce the Didcot - Bristol section still further if the times fit. Under £30 is possible - under £25 even for a latish train back.
All a saving on the £97 standard return......0 -
Birmingham to London
If using Virgin train to Euston - return ticket can be approx £120 (peak time)
However, if you get the Virgin Train from Birmingham New Street to Banbury = approx 20 return (peak time)
Banbury to London return = approx £40 peak time (incl Underground!) Gets you into London Marylebone, which is only a £2 bus ride to Euston.

You are a bit out on your fares - a peak day return to London from Banbury is £54, £5 extra to include the tube
But you've overestimated getting to Banbury - £13.90 return
But why not start your journey at Snow Hill or Moor Street - on the same train you'd be getting from Banbury. Same fares. No changes.0 -
This journey uses a fantastically windy Central Trains route across Britain, (eventually ending up in Liverpool) but dont go on Trainline and ask for a return ticket. Go for singles both ways and split your journey Norwich-Peterborough, Peterborough-Nottingham and Nottingham-Manchester. You will stay on the same train, probably in the same seat and save around 50% of the quoted return fare if you can book 7-14 days in advance of travel. I have done this several times. If you want to go somewhere on the edge of Manchester, for example, Macclesfield or Bolton, just pay the extra when you get there. It seems the more tickets they issue, the less money they get. Bit silly really0

Does anyone have any suggestions for splitting from Beverley (East Yorkshire) to either Penzance or Redruth on 9th February. I want to get the 07.43 which changes at Sheffield and Exeter St Davids and arrives at 17.11. I've tried splitting at Birmingham but it doesn't seem to make a difference.
Thanks!0 -
Try going via London
07:43 from Beverley arriving Kings Cross at 11:14 : £37.00
12:05 from Paddington arriving Penzance at 17:11 : £26.50
Plus £4 for the Tube fare
Slightly cheaper than £150 - and exactly the same travel time0 -
You could try multiple splits - any or all of the major stations en route. It will take you a while to try and there is no guarantee of success - which is why I'm not going to try.
It's worth trying Birmingham Cheltenham AND Bristol though.0 -
