    Hi all,

I need to book two tickets from Haverfordwest to Birmingham (1 adult, 1 child). We're travelling on Thursday 14th July - we would prefer to get to Birmingham by 9pm.
I'm completely new at this split ticket thing so I was hoping that someone would be able to help :o

    Thank you in advance!! :j

You don't need to split - there are advance singles at £21 or £31 for the adult for the complete journey depending on times - half price for the child

Cardiff Central would be the obvious splitting point if you needed to. Possibly Cheltenham as well

    Hi,

I regularly travel Taunton to London for work, sometimes at short notice so I can't always get an advance ticket, they also seem to be getting more scarce.

So not fancying the £105 single cost decided to try my first split.

06:17 Taunton to Paddington arriving 08:38

    Split as follows:

    Taunton to Westbury £11.20
    Westbury to Pewsey £7.90
    Pewsey to Newbury £7.80
    Newbury to London Paddington £25.90

    Total cost: £52.80
    Saving: £52.20!

Same train no changes, job done.

I was planning to make this journey this week, however the train was cancelled, with my combination of tickets already in my hand the next train I could get was the 0706 it stopped at all the right stations.

By chance I overheard the train crew discussing the fact that Pewsey to London at 0809 is off peak so split for the future on this train is as follows.

    Taunton to Westbury £11.20
    Westbury to Pewsey £7.90
    Pewsey to London Paddington £25.40

    Total of £44.50

This is for a train leaving Taunton at 0706 and arriving in London at 0921 saving over standard single fare of £60.50!
  • I know there are often cheaper Advance tickets available (tickets fro tomorrow are at £29 each way!) but the Anytime standard Return fare is £148. If you're caught short and can't get an Advance ticket, then an Anytime Return from Nailsea & Backwell to Didcot Parkway is £56.20 and another Anytime Return from Didcot to Slough is £15.60 - total: £71.80 and a saving of £76.20

    Happy Travelling folks!:j

This may be of use to people travelling through London on a single (not day return) journey.

Coming back to Gatwick Airport on holiday (flying out from LHR). Not using the Gatwick Express prefer FCC to Farringdon, tube to Liverpool Street, GA to Waltham Cross. Will be travelling at peak time.

    Ticket Cost £22.30

    Tickety Split says
    Gatwick to East Croydon £4.90
East Croydon to Waltham Cross £14.30 = £19.20

However split the second ticket East Croydon to Ponders End (or Brimsdown) £7.40
then Ponders End to Waltham Cross £2.50 = £9.90
Total Ticket Cost £14.80, a saving of 1/3rd

Reason is you are travelling through London (in this case Zone 5 to Zone 5) so effectively pay far less for that journey.

If you had Oyster £7.40 becomes £5.90, but it means getting off the train at East Croydon & Ponders End to swipe the card.

As all tickets can be purchased on line, in advance, and collected from a self service machine, that will also save time queuing at Gatwick.
  • Tickety Split isn't working right now - the Ajax doesn't seem to be pulling in any station data, and even if I put the exact correct station in manually, it's saying "Please select a valid departure station".
Chrome, Firefox, IE, all of 'em!
  • done today, for travel on Oct 6th to arrive around or before 9am, leaving after 6pm - going from Manchester to Milton Keynes

tried from Victoria (mvo) 27x2 singles, salford crescent (sld), same, split at wilmslow (wlm) and stockport cost the same as from manc (ex the ticket from manc to those stations, so effectively more)

    not split:
    return 58
    2 singles
    man>mkc 5:25 for 10gbp or the 5:55 for 12.50gbp (arrive 7:11 and 7:31 resp); 07:15 for 19.50gbp (arrives 08:46, stops at stockport and stoke-on-trent)
    mkc>man 16:50 or 17:50 or 18:50 for 19.50gbp (or the 19:50 or 21:05 or 21:45 for 24.50gbp)

    split at crewe:
the 5:25 and 5:55 are both a 9.10gbp return man>cre (these are the same trains that go to mkc, singles for these journeys are both 9gbp)
    6:30 man>cre 12.30gbp return (12.20gbp single, arrives 7:05 cre)

    6:00 cre>mkc at 10gbp (see above); 6:29 cre>mkc 12.50gbp (this makes me wonder why I'm trying this.....)
    6:38 cre>mkc single 10gbp; return 19gbp (arrives 9:04 - taking twice as long!)
7:07 cre>mkc single 27gbp (possibly connects with the one arriving 7:05 from man)

    18:25 mkc>cre 18.90gbp (arrives cre 20:36 - long journey)
    18:50 mkc>cre single 21.50gbp (also arrives 20:36, same platform 3)
    19:25 mkc>cre single 7gbp (cheap! arrives cre 21:30, platform 8)

    20:50 cre>man single 12.20gbp (platf 1, 53min)
    21:19 cre>man single 9gbp (platf 5, 34min)
    21:33 cre>man single 12.20gbp (platf 6, 42min)
    21:50 cre>man single 12.20gbp (platf 1 again)

I am sure there was a cheap connection there somewhere, but I think I got a bit lost... also the earlier trains seem very early, so I'm half tempted to pay extra to get more sleep, but that seems to mess up the split again... *argh*

Does anyone know - does the MSE application or mobile site have outages from time to time?

I used the mobile site from my phone a bit earlier on, and had some success, but then new searches would skip back to the starter page. I cleared the cache and history, restarted the phone, but still the same.

And now it's not working from the PC, so I assume it wasn't a problem related to my phone

Normally I use the Scotrail website to purchase train tickets – no charges. I'm travelling to Buxton next month from Glasgow. The first train ex Glasgow I'm able to catch is the 11:40 but the Scotrail (& four other) websites don’t include this train as an option, only allowing the 12:00. The 11:40 is allowed to Manchester – cost £16 whilst the 12:00 is £35.50 (Buxton £38.80). I suspect the 11:40 is not included as an option because arrival in Buxton is by the same train as the 12:00 departure. Hang on though, I’d willingly loiter at Manchester Piccadilly for 20 minutes if it was going to save me £22.80! Actually with split ticketing at Preston I managed to get the fare down to £63.75. This has been doing my head in for 24 hours but I was sure there must be a way round it. There is -takethetrain website I haven’t used this website before but it’s great as it gives you all the available trains & I would certainly recommend you have a look next time you’re in the market for tickets. There are good filtering options, delivery by post & no charges. It even notes that the 11:40 is “overtaken” by the 12:00.
    So, in summary
Off Peak Return (or two off peak singles) £77.80
    Split ticketing (Preston) £63.75
    Straightforward takethetrain website £54.80

If you suspect there may be alternative slower trains then this may even be a cheaper alternative than split ticketing. worth a look.
